I found a '54 MB at potentially a great price... but there are problems. no case. no coa. no trem cover (no serial number). the headstock is signed by greg fessler and it appears to be a '54 reissue. if you could get this around say $2k, would you jump anyways or walk away?

That's a lot of missing items, and important ones at that. It would make me concerned as to whether the rest was all in place.

Personally, I would walk away. It might involve dragging feet, but I'd walk.

Thanks Mike.

the backplate and coa have been found.

I'm having him pull the pickguard and take pictures of the underside. This guitar is supposed to have handwound Abby's corrrect? I'll post more pic's when I get them.

Not trying to knock anything here. I have some pickups wound by Abby and they are the best pickups I have but by "handwound" I presume you mean Abby guided the wire onto the bobbin on the pickup winding machine. :D

OK, second round of pic's. the pickups are not signed "ABBY" but the solder joints look original. is that normal?

I have a 54' MB built by Dennis Galuszka, best strat I've played, hands down, the pickups look correct, they should not be signed by Abby. It's a shame that someone replaced the knobs and tip. but if it has COA with the matching serial # backplate you may try to get the price down a bit (due to lack of case and knobs/switch), these strats are awesome IMHO. Also, make sure the bridge saddles say "pat pend", and that they were not changed too.

The saddles are correct. I shrunk the pic's down as they were huge when I received them but in one of them you can see it.

I guess the question I need to answer is, do I want a great playing guitar or a collectors item. If I want both, then I need to pay full price. If I want a great player at potentially a great price, then this might be a great opportunity.

I found this site yesterday:
http://gmvintagerestorations.com/f_parts/f_parts.html

I could get the look... but not the real polystyrene.
