So I am in Atlanta on business and stopped by the platinum store tonight. 4 nice strats:

'58 3TSB - $44k
'61 3TSB, Birds-Eye Maple - $35k
'64 3TSB - $35k
'69 3TSB - $10k

Having a couple '60 CS strats I wanted to take the opportunity to compare vintage to CS.

I had them pull the '61 down. SO BEAUTIFUL. the birds-eye on this neck was FANTASTIC! to drool all over. The 3TSB looked like a bad spray paint job. I have no reason to believe it wasn't original, so don't take that out of context. The guitar felt like a feather in my hand! So light! The wear on the neck was very natural feeling. The CS had decent wear, but didnt feel as good or look as good. the pickguard on the '61 had not greened near as much as the CS. Cosmetically, I see what people mean by CS using the wrong Volume / Tone knobs. Also, the indent for the numbers had greened. total miss here from FCS. Hope FCS corrects this. The '61s rosewood board was richer in color. dark with hints of red. The CS (I guess Indian) was a dull color. Both had nice patterns though. The other thing I noticed was that all 4 fenders magnet poles were flat, while the '60CS had bevelled edges on the poles.

So, cosmetically, my biggest complaint on the FCS for fender would be the poor reproduction of volume/tone knobs. seemingly small, but should be corrected.

Now to tone. The '61 sounded great. Original tone with some wear. May need to be re-surfaced in some places but this guitar was a fantastic player! It sounded so great. A real pleasure to play and I would love to own this guitar.

BUT

I can't say that it actually sounded better, or much different than the CS. Mike and team - great job on making excellent sounding/playing guitars! My biggest citique/complaint is the tone knobs! PLEASE FIX THE KNOBS!!!!! and sell them to current owners so we can fix the guitars we have already bought!

I guess one other thing to add - the vintage strat tuners said "kluson deluxe". I guess its kinda like nit-picking about the saddles and Fender might not be able to repro that due to legal reasons...

Cool - thanks for the comparison! I wasn't aware that the Custom Shop knobs were different.
