I've had a bad case of GAS the last year. My intent was not to build a large collection of guitars, but to get a few guitars that kind of represent what my hero's play. Well I've fallen off the wagon and purchased largely based on impulse and fascination of different models. Of the original 4 I wanted, I have one now and one currently being built. Boy did I take a left when I should have went right...

With that being said, I find myself looking at dealers for what they have in stock and thinking about that next guitar. I am accepting that I am collecting at this time. I intend to play them, but there can be only one #1.

I look at Alain's beautiful collection and notice that his guitars are either masterbuilt, or limited edition/limited release. I've found 4 guitars I like. 2 are limited edition and two are regular models from different years. 1 of the regular model guitars is actually one of my original 4.

What do you guys think? pick up one of the limited editions because its cool and may have some limited wow factor to it or go for the one I have been thinking about when I started?

How do you guys decide to add a new custom shop to the stable? Alain, do you only purchase because it is limited and / or unique? your guitars seem to have investment value to them, so should that even be a consideration in the purchase?

thanks guys,

I've been collecting for a few years and I realized that I don't really need all these guitars and the some of them never get played.

It made me wonder what the hell am I do? Then something happened to me that really helped me start using more of my guitars.

I moved to Weston, MO and could only bring two guitars. I ended up taking the two guitars I played least. It forced me to get out of my comfort zone and play stuff I never really touched. Great learning experience. I'm currently playing my Tele I just had set up.

In a bit I'll bet my Les Paul set up and only play it for about 6 months.

Alain seems to focus mainly on 1 off guitars, art guitars and high end custom shop pieces.

If I want some nice Fender or Gibson guitars, I would go straight to the Custom Shop models and ignore the rest... not because the regular production guitars are poor quality, but because the Custom Shop allows you to get closer to exactlly what you want.

Even though electric guitars are essentially slabs of wood, there definitely is a difference in quality.

I agree on getting the custom shop. I just closed the deal on one of the original guitars I wanted. '60 fiesta red custom shop NOS. This guitar is not "limited" but it is one that I want as a player. I'm excited to get it home!

If I had the money I would love to have a MB '62 sonic blue Strat.

Nitro paint w/o clear coat on top
Dark slab rosewood fret board w/ aged clay fret markers
early '60s "C" shaped neck.
Bone nut
Vintage parts

I've been jonesing for this guitar for about ten years. I played a '62 refinished sonic blue Strat that a guy I know was selling for about $2K. Unfortunately I didn't have the money. I've been kicking myself for not finding the money somewhere.

I think if you collect it's nice to have a theme to run with. But then again, I'm pretty OCD.

For example, I'd like to build a Strat collection comprised of the non-typical models- American Deluxe HSS, Hot Rodded American Series and a smattering of Custom Shop models. I'd personally stick to HSS as it's my favourite configuration.

Some people will just see something they like and want to add it to a collection. Some might do it by colour- a full collection of Surf Green Fenders would be awesome if it existed!

I was thinking this at one point.. either try and collect a NAMM guitar from each year, or a roadshow guitar, or only limited editions. the problem is there are guitars I want for playing and guitars that are cool. The two don't always seem to mesh. I like the vintage radius and fret size and all of the limited edition guitars I have seen are "modern spec". I'm in the minorty of fenders demographic I suppose.

thanks for the response though! :D

So, just my personal experience.

I had a basis with guitars I purchased new in the 60's ( I'm 66) and lucky enough to buy another one without selling a previous one.
More or less I kept them, then putting aside "collecting" or even playing guitar because of my job not allowing me anytime for that for about 30 years.
Then in the 90's I was traveling less and was considering again purchasing guitars without budget limitations.
First I went to buy guitars I wished to have in the 60's but had no chance to buy then.
Then I found the Fender Custom Shop and started to buy those Limited Editions, One-Off, guitars produced regularly but which brought an interest, either historically or soundwise.
Then I focused on Art guitars and Tribute ones, but also those which were aesthetically attracting.
So for several years now I only buy guitars from the Fender Custom Shop. Save for some vintage guitars which surface as and when.
When I see a guitar I know instantly if I want it or not.
Sometime my quest for a guitar can last for several years before I can put my hand on one, and then you have to react instantly (also financially, a pristine Robben Ford by example)
BTW, I never ordered a guitar of my own from the Fender Custom Shop. I let the guys do what they think the best they can do and I never have been disapointed; far from that.
Return On Investment has almost never been the priority (and never should be).
I do play guitar and have gigs with several of them, based on look and sound.
When you start a collection, you shoud think of
-a certain model , different dates, colors,
-guitars from a certain period,
-guitars from a specific Company
-etc
otherwise you'll spend a lot of money not knowing your goal.
You can collect guitars in accordance with your budget, the pleasure is the same.
And never ending

When it comes to collecting I just buy whatever really catches my fancy. If it's magical to me I buy it. If over time I get tired of it then I sell it.

A good point of view...

Storing my instruments has been the biggest problem for me. I ended up selling about 8 instruments because I just didn't have the space.

When your collection is budding, it looks like you have an incredibly spacious room; and over the years.....

You have to ask yourself why you are collecting.

If you are collecting to pad your 401(k), you missed the boat on cheap vintage guitars.
If you are collecting to make a quick buck, do your research, buy from buyers on CL that need to sell quickly. Visit forums and look for chatter around upcoming guitars.
If you are collecting to build your own museum, have a theme. Pick a brand, an era, a story, etc.
If you are collecting just to spend money, buy whatever you please.
Quite simply, don't buy #&#@! Quality over quantity.
