Good evening,

I am in the process of ordering a 1968 fender strat and I am torn between 2 builders ( John Cruze and Todd Krause )

I know that there is a long wait for both of these guys and they are both awesome builders. I just wanted to get some input from others that have ordered MB Strats before and what their experiences were like.

FWIW I'm going for that late Hendrix at the Fillmore balls out sound and the guitar is going to be spec'd with the following options:

Med Relic ( arm wear and checking nothing over the top crazy )
1 PC quartersawn maple neck, nitro finish, light tint, 9.5 radi, 6105 frets, and either mid 60's oval C or 68/0 U shape
Alder body sorted for light weight
Hardware - vintage
P/Us - 3 hand wound Abbys - I love my CS 62 w/abbys and they read n 5.69, m 5.68, and b 5.75 ( this is a hot setup through my rig but I think I want something a little hotter )

Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Gino

Hi Gino,
My favorite builder is Chris Fleming, but he doesn't build anymore he went to R&D. I have ordered 3 Strats built by Fleming. If I would order today, I would go for John Cruz.

BTW, why do you want a quartersawn maple neck?

Gents,

Thanks for the replies.

I had been told the QS neck was stronger and I had picked the 1 PC maple just because I did not know the difference between that and the maple cap?

Any help/further info on this one would be awesome.

Regards,
Gino

If I had the money, Yuriy Shishkov! I don't know how long the waiting times are for Yuriy (probably long). He was a Senior Master builder too but the CS doesn't use that title anymore.

Check out his fanclub:

I never liked a quartersawn neck on a Strat. Yes ,they are stronger but a good riftsawn or flatsawn neck will be fine. Look at all these old Strat's from the 50's, it is very rare to find a quartersawn neck. The neck is a major part of how your Strat will sound like. But maybe you like it, but talk to you Masterbuilder they will steer you in the right direction.

Is the maple cap the same as the Round-Lam Maple option on the custom form?

Mucho thanks

Gents,

Thanks for all of your help!

I pulled the trigger the other day on a MB 1968 CAR strat by Todd. I know there is a 2 year wait on these guitars. To be honest I am a pedal junkie and have waited longer for a guitar pedal :)

I was torn with another color so this only means I have to order a second one soon!
