hey guys just looking at alain's pictures of John Mayer's Black One. An Awesome site by the way! (guitarmotel.com) But I was wondering.... I heard john say that he picked the black one to be finished that way for technical reasons. That he wanted a guitar that was full of resonance. My question is that since the guitar basically has any paint on it, why not just have a guitar with no finish? I mean john's guitar does not even look like it has any oil finish on it?
Thoughts?

Pardon my ignorance on the Mayer Strat subject but wasnt his Strat reliced? Or did it happen naturally? I mean how long has the kid been playing? I'd be interested in getting that info.

ya I dont buy that. after seeing another members post of the SRV guitar and the black1 I think he basically said "I want stevies guitar but lets change the color so it isn't so obvious..."

I have no proof of this but the similarities are too coincidental.

i guess what i am asking is are there any negative side effects with not finishing a guitar?
- no oil, no nitro, no poly? just the plain wood

No downsides other than its susceptibility to moisture.

what can happen with the moisture? anything beyond warping?.... even if it did warp would the effects be detrimental to play ability?

Moisture content will change the tone of your guitar.

I have a '62 copy I built from parts. The only thing I put on it was a golden brown stain I did by hand. It's a great sounding guitar that has lasted me the past ten years.

I always felt thick paint kills sustain. Like the sound just gets sucked up. On the other hand guitars are very individual things and it could be all in our heads. Who knows that the truth is.

I just know that '62 Strat copy is everyone's faverate Strat to play when they come to my house.

My '87 Strat plus was also stripped down to the wood and stained (it's what inspired me). I played about 5 other guitars the day I bought it. People were playing it while I was paying for it.

Truth is that there is a difference, and it's measurable by instruments, but hard to hear for most people.

As far as thick finishes "killing sustain", that's nonsense, as paint is applied to wood to stiffen it and protect it, and not just from moisture, either. Paint is stiffer and harder than any guitar wood, so if anything it should improve sustain. Modern finishes--acrylics, polyesters and polyurethanes--are dense plastics with no air inclusions. Wood is cellulose; much less dense, and with a multicellular organic structure, that has air and moisture inclusions. Remember the Dan Armstrong plexi (methyl methacrylate) guitars? Dense (and heavy) as hell, with (theoretically) killer sustain.

A finish like paint or polyester does, however, change the resonant frequencies--the stiffer you make a panel, the higher the resonant frequencies.

This is a complex subject, but general statements should be based upon both science and experience. Too many rumors based upon bad science are already becoming "accepted wisdom" with regard to guitar finishes, and most of those folks who simply parrot opinions without thinking about what they're saying, are wrong, as were the original opinions that the parroted comments are based upon.

A guitar that absorbs too much moisture, through high humidity, expands and swells. This distorts the geometry of the guitar and, consequently, its tone and playability. A guitar may sound, for want of a better word, "soggy." It lacks volume and projection and has a dull lifeless tone. It is also possible for a guitar to suffer structural damage when humidity is very high. A common problem is "bloating" in the back, especially if the back is made of rosewood or some other very hard wood.

The body is treated with wax in the unfinished parts.
