I think Fender folks call it synthetic bone. I don't think they will provide the actual animal bone.

Well, there were numerous discussions here on the forum in regards to the "quality" of one vs another vs another material (brass, steel, other plastics, etc).

The gist is that they all do the job well enough that if it works don't touch it and if it doesn't work for example tunning issues are the culprit. You have to clean and/or modify the nut slots and it will work. One thing that seems to be advantageous for the natural bone is "self lubricating" properties which I can't prove since I am not using natural bone on any of my guitars. This is advantage appears to be, that if you are doing heavy trem work ala metal guys. For everybody else I don't think it makes a zip of difference other than bragging rights that the guitar is equipped with the elephant tusq nut.

Hey no probs,

Here is another thought for you, just to throw the wrench in here 8)

"Compensated nut", now we are talking.....

Try this: tune your guitar to concert pitch, strum open E and open D chords, just simple up-down and change the chord. Hear the discord? You might benefit from the compensated nut.

Check this thread for some interesting info
