Basic question: The high E tuner on my CS 1996 '60 Tele Custom somehow got damaged and needs to be replaced. It's a Fender Vintage style tuner. What do I order to replace it? Thanks.

Kluson tuners - nickel ones. But I think you'll have to buy a complete set of 6. Im sure there are plenty of places to buy them from and find the best price. I only give this web store as an example because ive purchased the exact same tuners from their UK site before, albeit left handed ones.

Hope this helps...

Here is one source. You want the "Original nickel plated tuners." They are described as "Kluson style" but I believe are made by Gotoh, and they are what the CS uses for vintage style tuners.
Jimclapton is correct that you need to buy a whole set, which is a bummer. However it does mean that you have spares to hand should any of the others on the guitar become problematic!

Thanks guys.

Since I posted this I have done some "internet" research (yes- a highly accurate source  ) and found that the Kluson tuners that WD sells are Chinese, made by Ping and the "Vintage Kluson Style" tuners made by Gotoh are Japanese.

Is this true? Mine was stamped "Japan" on the back of the one I took off.

I am looking at these. This company is right down the road from me. My main concern is fit. I don't want to have to route or drill to put these in. Will they fit?

Fender Custom Shop uses Gotoh 880's or SD90's. You can get them from allparts TK0880-01 I think is the number.

I know Fender used Klusons for their early guitars - mid 50s to mid 60s. Anyone know why they went with Gotoh instead of going back to Kluson when the vintage boom began and they started knocking out all these vintage reissues???

I doubt there is a huge difference between either set, they look identical but if your CS has Gotohs you might as well go for them!

You shouldnt need to do anything to fit them. They will even come with new bushings and screws.
