I was just wondering. I bought my NOS Nocaster new back in '99. It's a great sounding guitar and I play it to death. Here's the deal: after 12 years It still looks pretty much the same as as it did when I bought it-kinda new looking!

No checking. No finger board ware. The metal hardware still looks new. After all this time it looks nothing like a "Relic", or ever a "Closet Classic"

I admit that I do pamper it. I wipe it down after using it and then it goes right into the case.

Did the original Tele's from he 50's that you see now-a-days just get trashed? Is that how they got they got that relic look? "Leave it in the trunk of your car in Fargo, ND in the winter for a dozen years?"

Do these NOS guitars have the same nitro finish as the originals or is it a bit different?

What's your experience with your NOS guitars?

I have a custom shop NOS strat and in the one year ive owned it its picked up one barely noticable ding. Obviously very early days though.

But I think unless you are a gigging musician who plays alot of shows and slings that guitar anywhere and everywhere its probably unrealistic to expect it to 'relic' even after 12 years.

I also have a custom telecaster relic which i think looks cool and i know there is no way id naturally age a guitar to its current condition so if i wanted a beat up looking guitar i knew id have to buy one in that condition - be it vintage or custom shop relic.

I think thats why relics are popular. Most guitarists will realise there is little chance of them naturally wearing their guitar to a relic state like those famous old guitars we all know and revere.

If you want to relic it the real way, even nitro will take a licking unless you play in bars. there it will fall, get knocked over, dinged up, etc..
The other way is lacquer thinner, sand paper, etching solution and screw driver...
I have an old Strat in nitro, very thin and playing at home for years still hasnt worn it out noticeably.

Not an option-I'm sure some people do that, though

What about checking? Seems like that would have happened just a bit by now. Or is it because I keep it in my case and the climate here is good for wooden instruments, from what I've been told.

By the way my MB '54 Reissue's neck is showing some fretboard ware. It was completely clean when I bought it back in '04. I think the finish is a little thinner on that guitar.

Yea, weather checking is cold and heat overtime. Guitar wood shrinks and expand with temperature but nitro does not once cured, btw, it could take a very long time for nitro to fully cure and harden and weather checking to happen. A can of compressed air upside down and a air dryer take care of that. I seen some guys put the guitar body in the freezer for a few days too. :)

Nah. If my guitar wants to "decompose" I'm only going to allow it by it's own means.

Take some amber nitro to it or brown shoe polish.

Nice '56.

I need another CS '56. Had a vintage spec'd one once but i didnt get on with the radius and frets so sold it.

Both my custom shops have tinted laquered necks so they were that nice darkened colour right away. I dont like the super pale look that a lot of maple seems to have these days!

I don't usually like tinted necks, prefer to see them age naturally.

Though, I believe even in the 50s fender was already using amber nitro on their necks.

The only reason I started this thread is because I remember back in 1972 when I was searching to buy my first Strat I was at Hoffman's Music Store in downtown Spokane and they had a whole rack of used Strats and Teles from the 50's and 60's and the finish was peeling off of them and the white necked ones had ware on them and to me, at that time, looked like they picked them up off the highway after some big, terrible accident.

I thought my CS Tele would start looking that way by now. Even just a little. It does have a few minor dings but that's about it.

By the way, I ended up buying a '70 model, olympic white, slightly used. It was my main (and for most of that time my only) guitar for the next 20 years. I think I payed $250 for it. Could have been $350, but no more than that. That was a lot of years ago!
