I am severely jonesing for a Custom Shop early '60s rosewood board P-Bass but I don't see much of a selection out there and I really don't want to go the masterbuilt route. Now I know that there is a '51 P-Bass, a '55 P-Bass and a '59 P-Bass. I recall seeing a few one-off rosewood board P-Basses but I don't think they were production models. Does anyone have any CS P-Bass info? My ideal model would be a '61-'63 custom color with no matching headstock but a cool sunburst relic would do just fine!

Here are a few examples...

These basses would look and sound better with a maple fingerboard option and an extra Jazz pickup in the bridge position.

Currently, Fender offers four Closet Classic P-Basses from a specific period in the instrument's history: 1951, 1955, 1958 and 1960, with the blond 1958 resembling much to the same axe used by Willie Weeks (Clapton's current bassist) for many years and the 1955 looking close to Sting's mid-1950's Tele Bass.

Why no standard production model early '60s P-Basses?

Actually there are no plans for a MIM Classic '60s Precision. They released a MIM '50s Classic a couple of years ago along with a reliced Roadworn variant.

The Closet Classic 1960s is identical to Willie's sunburst original 1963 (though I saw him playing an Alleva-Coppolo replica of this bass two years ago).

I played a red '50s RW P-Bass at Daddy's Junky Music the other night and it felt pretty good and not bad for $1000, but I'd rather pay a little more and get a Custom Shop.

50's Precisions are mostly maple-neck models. Fender introduced the rosewood-neck option in late 1959.

If the bass you're talking about came with a rosewood fretboard and use a late 50's gold anodised pickguard, then it's an accurate recreation of the original late 1959 P-Bass.

The 50s RW is red with a gold pickguard but it has a maple board. There are a bunch of CS '59 P-Basses out there so that might be a good option if I want the rosewood board. On my last search I only came across two early '60s CS P-Basses ('61/'62):

I asked Mike for a 22-fret version of the '59 Precision. He told me that the Custom Shop could make everything a customer wants.

However, I'm afraid if a 22-fret neck could fit properly on a standard Precision body. Vineyard basses are constructed in such way standard bodies accept a 22-fret neck without any major alterations.

Mine :D 57 Relic, soft V neck, raised poles on a string pickups. Not sure if that's stock but it made me fall in love.

Not my Marshall's though, that picture was from the shop. I'm currently enjoying it punchy tones via a 73' SVT and 8x10"
