Mike or anyone else who knows

I recently managed to aquire a 66 Strat Candy Red Time Machine and it came with some very nice and different Pickups(which is why I got it). It was born in 2007 and I am curious if it has '66 PUs? If so how are the 65 different?

I know it is all relative. I have more Strats that I would care to admit to, but due to PUs are all quite sonically different and match up with different amps and effects in different ways. These PUs, due to their clarity, go well overdrivern into a vintage type amp at about 1 O'clock- especially the neck PU which with overwound PUS tends to get muddy to my ear. The bridge PU though is total icepick clean and I think I will bring it into the middle tone knob like Fender is doing these days.

Thanks in advance.

Peter

Hi there I can only speak of the ones I've seen.
The 66s are a lighter grey bobbin with black and yellow wires whilst the 65s have darker grey bobbin with black and white wires. The 65s were marked "65" and one set of the 66s had Abbeys initials. The stagger seems the same but I'm not sure about the material used for the windings.
To add to the confusion I did see a 66 limited edition in firemist closet classic and the spec said it had 65 pickups. I never saw inside it to check though.
Hope this helps otherwise maybe I could post some pics or better still maybe you could?

I was actually hoping to know more about them sonically.

We'll I plugged a 66 with maple neck and a 65 with rosewood. They were quite different. I really felt the 66s were glassier but hey unless you have the same guitar, record some tracks then swap the pus it could be due to a multitude of factors.
Some would argue it is because the 66 pickups have yellow braided wire rather than white!
There is an article here

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=41025

and halfway down a link about 65s.
As mentioned mine have darker grey bottoms. Now I'm left wondering do all the 65s have dark grey. The 66s are closer to the 69s in terms of light grey

I know this is starting to get a bit off topic and i'm not trying to hijack the thread but I just checked a custom modified that had 65 pus in the spec and they had light grey bottoms!
Maybe the earlier time machine 65s have dark grey and the more recent light which is probably more period correct?

Thanks for the input. Basically I have come to the conclusion that the 66 pickups work really well with effects going for that Hendrix swirl sound. I have plugged in a few other types of pickups (some overwound, some 54s etc) to my rig and they just didnt do it. I was thinking of doing up a 67 type thing(I love the big headstock) and trying to figure out what PUS would be similar but different-to help rationalize the purchase!

The 65/66 PUS are offered only with the guitars so there seems to be little info on them. Of course it depends on the rig. But I find that it really likes my 68 small box Plexi and 72 Metal face 50 using various effects including a vibe and an echo. I am sure it would sound killer into the tweed deluxes/champs but I haven't got around to testing that yet.

I have come to the 'low ouput is king' side after being on the ovewound side for the last decade. Evolution I guess. I tend to agree with a friend of mine who claims the sonic equation is approximately 30% guitar, 30% pickup, 30% amp and %100 practice.
