Im in the market for a new guitar and I just ran across the custom shop but there are some essential things I don't understand about it. Can you order a guitar with your own custom specs? If so, do you have to personally go into a custom shop dealer to show them what you want or is there a website you can do it from?

What's confusing me mostly is that I don't know if you have to choose from guitars that have been customized by famous artists or if you are allowed to actually place a custom order yourself.

Two degrees of freedom....... (costly) freedom....so....'when you're ready'.....
a.purchase a guitar from the current year's Custom Shop runs. These models can be found on the Custom Shop website and/or in current dealer stock.(preferabley Showcase Dealers), and can be ordered through them, as well.
b.find yourself a Showcase Dealer and spec out your own guitar. Depending on the complexity of the build it will be directed towards the Custom Shop (Teambuilt: with a different luthier handling a phase of its construction), or Masterbuilt by one Master Luthier with whom you will have a one on one relationship with during the project. The costs for custom built projects are considerably higher than the Custom Shop production runs, and even so higher for the Masterbuilt guitars. You can have all your guitars Masterbuilt if that is your preference. Search out a Showcase Dealer and ask some more questions.
c. Where guitars particular to known players are concerned, there are three levels:
1. The Artist Series which are built on the regular production line and are described as 'snapshot'
models of the real deal....close...but no cigar...and have been characterized as being less detail
oriented with respect to woods etc.
2. Custom Shop Signature Series instruments which are detail oriented artist models with more TLC
in the selection of woods and assembly.
3. Masterbuilt which, in the case of the Clapton guitar, for example, will be built to stage spec by the
luthier who builds his guitars.
Keep in mind that Fender will only build guitars connected with artists with whom they have a current endorsement contract. So if you want a Sambora, fuggeddaboudit.

Welcome, and keep those cards and letter coming.

Doc

Might want to point out that a Materbuilt guitar could take up to a couple of years between order and delivery and are $$$$$$.
