In the next few days I am either going to purchase a Fender CS 52 NOS with a Nocaster neck from Dave's guitars or a Fender CS 51 Nocaster with Abigail pickups. Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated. This is my first Fender purchase. Thanks for your help - this forum is great for rookies.

Watch your heart. If it skips a beat, buy the guitar. If it does it with both guitars, buy them both. If nothing happens, don't buy any guitar and see if your mind is playing tricks with you.

Cheers

David

Thanks for the replies. It would be great if I could play both guitars - however, logistics prevents this. I did play a production line 52 RI at a local Guitar Center and loved it. There is a $600 difference in the two guitars. Again, thanks for the comments.

Honestly: never ever buy a guitar without having touched and played it. If this guitar in the shop convinced you: buy it. Don't buy the unseen one because of 600 USD difference. Love has no price tag.

Cheers

I apologize David for my murky response. I am in the market for a Custom Shop Telecaster or Nocaster. Having never played a 52 RI and certainly never a Nocaster, I took a 50 mile trip to a Guitar Center that had a production model 52 RI. I loved it. That gave me confidence to purchase either a Custom Shop 52 or Nocaster. The production model 52 is $1599, the CS 52 is $2100 and the Nocaster is $2700. When I mentioned the $600 price difference I was refering to the difference between the two CS guitars. I suppose the real question is - is there that much difference between the Custom Shop and the production line Telecaster. I know that is an endless debate and is subject to budgetary constraints. Again, I should have been more clear.

T9 Tip Of The Day: For Newbies: With Fenders, mostly all I play, before even playing one in store, I look at back of headstock, which has found me more "winners" then not. I look for tight wood grain running straight through back of headstock (like you would see on a QS neck) into back of neck, NOT grain that's far apart from each other and or wavy/running all over the map. Next, I would play it accoustically and feel body for vibrations and how loud guitar is - all I do.

So if I had to buy without playing, I would get closeup pictures of back of headstock from store e-mailed to me if website didn't show and purchase the one with better/tighter grain if both met my specs equally. I would say my prayers to Fender Guitar Gods above that I got a winner.

Cheers!

EDIT: I just recalled, I bought from Music Gallery in IL a new roadshow CS 62 Heavy Relic in Candy Tangerine that I couldn't touch/play (had detailed pics), it had QS neck, so grain theory thrown out, so I had owner play guitar accoustically over phone so I could hear maybe how loud it sounded. For whatever it was worth, at least I felt I was part of purchase experience.

Let me add, it's not impossible that production model you liked wouldn't feel better then CS's if you could play them.

Ah, OK. This clears things up, thanks for diving deeper.

So you played a production 52 RI. But not the Custom Shop 52 and not the Nocaster. Now we're back at my original statement: never buy without having played the guitar. It's like marrying a girl because you liked her sister.

And always try to play them acoustically - its hard in a store but get somewhere quiet and play, listen for natural sustain, clarity of notes and harmonics and for me i like to feel the way the neck and body resonate as i strum chords or play single notes.

If all those boxes are ticked chances are you have a keeper before you even plugging in.

Which of course you still need to do to check the pickups responsiveness and tone etc...!

Heck you might not even like the way the volume or tone pots roll off, and while these all seems like small things they are important - both instruments will probably be of stunning quality so you need to go deeper to determine which is best.

Its is, all things considered a nice problem to have!

Generally speaking, 'yes', however the previous comments about playing them cannot be ignored. What is right to your hands and your ears is a matter of personal judgement and preference and you might wind up saving a few hard earned dollars in the process if the difference is negligible. I once picked up and played a "Nashville Tele" which was priced well under $1000, and was quite impressed with THAT particular guitar. You never know.

And sometimes there is a small detail that you totally love or totally hate. It's just not possible to tell from pictures. Or do you marry a girl out of a brochure?

Cheers

From what I've seen at this tender age of mine, one might think so.

Well, I'm not in the office. I'm enjoying a well-earned week out of the rat race, and Florida is finally giving me a shot at some decent weather...high 70's, blue sky and sun. I'm just about ready to hop in the pool, but will be back plowing the road come Tuesday morning. As to source for your humor, I wish I could share with you a look at the clubhouse dining room at brunch today. :?
