EDIT:

Mike- Yes, I believe another pickup company pickup set were tested, but I don't want to go their - nothing good to come from it, I could never prove it and my belief is no one even at Fender could ever be 100% that JM never tried/tested/used another pickup from another company.

I asked, you replied and I'll take your word.

Thank you all for all your comments; I can promise that I will try to be as objective as possible when presenting my findings but in the end I'm just excited to have a couple of incredibly sounding guitars and getting them into the studio.
Have a great weekend y'all

M.

Interesting test in view :)

Not quite clear where all this is coming from or why. However I suggest that you find yourself a copy of the most recent issue of Vintage Guitar Magazine and read the feature article on Jeff Beck, particularly the notes from his guitar tech. You'll learn some interesting facts about the specs on Beck's own 'signature' Stratocaster, and the rest of his road gear. It's fair to say that what is revealed is quite common across the industry. As WS Gilbert wrote..."things are seldom what they seem." It also serves to explain much of what audiences fail to understand in their pursuit of tone.

Most of these artists have their own techs who maintain their gear. I would be most surprised to learn that FMIC is maintaining Mayer's collection.

Alain, yes it will be excited to run the test, I think the 83 will be excited to come out and play considering she has been tucked away since January.
Doc, you wouldn't happen to remember what month of that magazine you refer to is do you?
Just a few hours and I'm off to the airport.

....the latest...It's in my carry bag. Just received it this week. He's on the cover. Safe journey. With all the yadayada we've entertained ourselves with over these past many month, I too am curious as to how these two instruments compare. We'll have our own mini-throw down. 8)

So Jeff is on the cover; yeah I call him Jeff, jajaja, great, hope I can get my hands on it. Have been listening to him a lot lately and playing a lot of Telecaster (fingerstyle too), specially his new rockabily album which inclues a tribute to Les Paul; great stuff and check out the DVD; the extras are great especially where he showcases his most priced vintage guitars.

So, yeah I'm looking forward to the throw down; just finishing a few things here at the office and I'm off. Thanks Doc and thank you all.

Not saying it happens here, but everytime anything John Mayer gets brought up, it's Mayer's Haters vs Mayer's Maniacs...

The discussion here simply was about a remark made by JM and its interpretation thereof. Got nothing to do with haters vs maniacs...

... while the real question is to what extent can a MIA Black 1 hold its ground against one of the MB 83...

Throw down!
Black 1 500 vs Black 1 83
Amp: Marshall 50 Watt Modern Vintage
Pedal: Ibanez Tube Screamer TS808 Keeley modded
Both guitars were played 15 minutes each with and without the pedal, through all pickups, with licks, solos and strums ranging from Clapton, Cream, John Mayal, Hendrix through Led Zeppelin and of course John Mayer.

The Black 1 500 is a great solid US made guitar which can bite on any tone you throw at it. It has great sustain and power and doesn't loose character when you roll the top down; it also cleans really nicely when the volume is rolled down. The neck pickup is really sweet and has a really rich gama of harmonics; great for funking out too and when put in the next position and gets you close to the JM tone; I said close since it's got big dippers but not completely. I'll get back to this one in a minute. The middle position is also great for rocking out; with or without the booster. The neck pickup can very well bite your head off with great phrasing and nice rounded definition. This is a players guitar because it's got great action, great sustain, variety of tones, stays in tune can dirty up, bite off and clean up on command and responds when pushed or back down. Really a guitar that will be gigging with me in the upcoming weeks, great job Fender.

Now for the part we've all been waiting for.

The 83 is a MONSTER of an instrument, I plugged it in, just strum a chord clean and a variety of incredible richness of sounds harmonics and sustain emanated from the amp's speakers.
Started with the middle position and could not would not believe my ears; bell like sounds amazing subtleness (like dissecting truly dissecting each part I played); amazing phrasing, notes did not get lost or mushed up with others; clear separation of every intension, note and phrasing; when chording and when soloing. Ok This One IS the Black 1 IMO and DOES absolutely nail the Mayer tone, to my ears at least, and it does it in every position, especially in the neck pickup and middle position between neck and middle pickup. WOW! I was completely floored. Played sunshine of your.. with the top rolled off and felt goose bumps. The amazing thing is that clean or boosted you don't loose any information and let me tell YOU about the Bass on this thing; OMG the Bass is out of this world; SO I don't know what Fender put on this guitar or on in these pickups but this IS a serious guitar player music lover's guitar. It's the most exquisite meal or wine you can have; I found myself having great trouble putting it down and storing it back again into its cushy cumfy case; but I did.

Conclusions: Different Leagues; the 500 is a great Players guitar, but when you come to terms into comparing it with the 83, the 83 has its own league in every aspect, tone, harmonics, playability, richness, sustain, phrasing, bass, mids, I can't go on. This was not a fair comparison to begin with. The 500 does not belong in the 83 territory by any of my standards, it's great players guitar and definetly a keeper; but the 83 to my ears at least IS the Mayer Tone in full color and sound. THIS IS MY OPINION and just wanted to share it with you guys that's it. Try the test on your own and let me know your thoughts. BTW I'm keeping them both but at least now I know where my 10.5k plus went to. A GREAT BUY A GREAT GUITAR FROM A GREAT COMPANY; Thumbs way up!

Alas, I don't have the equipment to fulfill such a request, even if I did I would not know how to upload it here, but will be happy to answer any questions you have.
My apologies.

No worries, your review was great. In future, if you have a cell phone that records video, you could do video clip with each guitar and upload to YouTube and copy YT link in this thread. Everyone also could see those great guitars, as 1-83 are all slightly different looking via grain visible on body, etc.

Cheers.
