Hey Mike,

That quote came from a video where John is anouncing the release of the Black 1 /500 limited and he said "it has the absolute heart and soul of the Black 1" I disagree with this statement I believe (and yet I can and may be wrong pending a more thourough A/B of both guitars) that the guitar that can come close to that "heart and soul expression" is the 83 (if any guitar can) for the reasons stated in my previous post.

But again language is incredibly subjective and it is not my intention to state that Mayer is wrong in his statement; however that particular statement does not convince me as a player, a consumer, or a collector; yet I do love the sound of those pickups and bought the Blck 1 500 to A/B with the 83 and prove myself right or wrong and to own another great sounding guitar; that's pretty much it.

Cheers!

M.

Yah! Just know that MY version of "heart and soul" of a guitar is probably different than yours.
That's the quandary here. One guy comes on and he defines "heart and soul" and that definition may not be what JM meant.

ME

I think the issue here is that to capture the "heart and soul" of something is quite a bold statement. Yes, it will mean different things to different people, but having that said, it would not be wording I would use in such a casual manner.

Thanks for sharing your opinion on the matter, Mike.

Can't wait to learn about your experience with both guitars, Stipe!

The first line of my response and it's exposition speaks to that very thing, and Stipe clarifies his position further by informing us that it was Mayer, himself, who was the author of the quote without additional clarification. Seems to me that before anyone could possibly construct a solid argument as to why they differed with Mayer's opinion, Mayer would first have to expand on it further, for our mutual benefit. Absent that, I sense that Stipe sees something ludicrous in Mayer's observations, considering the product which followed not too long after. If that $1500 effort truly did what Mayer, by his own admission, believes it did, then the Cruz effort might be concluded to have been an extremely costly overkill. I couldn't argue against Stipe's point of view in this and, for what it's worth, it wouldn't be the first time that Mayer had opened mouth an inserted foot, grandstanding in a public forum, without thinking aforehand. Having had the knowledge that there was a rather remarkable replica in the pipeline, he likely ought to have been a tad more reserved in his appreciation for this budget effort and saved the superlatives for the guitar which followed to everyone's utter satisfaction, pole piece heights not withstanding.

Sorry if my personal prejudices seem to bleed through here, but I'm remain of the opinion that Mayer is stll pending a serious growth spurt, long overdue. You obviously know him far better than we. Unfortunately, what ever forms your opinions of him has failed to come through on this end.

WOW this has got hot!

I would also say that (Stipe) you have perhaps made it very difficult for yourself to now give a fair and unbiased opinion on the instrument!

Dont look to prove John Mayer wrong or yourself right, but just enjoy the instrument for what it is.

Is it as good as the 83MB versions? doubtful, is the MB version $9k better? who knows. They are two different guitars - one is heavly distressed with a round lam board and QS neck, the other isnt, but other than that....

How to weights compare? Neck thickness and profile? Sustain unplugged & plugged. Resonance? Tonal differences in each pickup (regardless of polepiece height!) so on and so forth.

Your a very lucky man to be able to own both and i look forward to hearing your findings!

Same, as I couldn't imagine someone owning one of the 83, buying one of the 500
Hats off and let us know.

I see Stipe's interest as having been a comparision of the two guitars, and taken issue with something Mayer is publicly known to have said on video, to which ME countered with a short rebuttal, both individuals equally entitled to their points of view. In the end, what Stipe sees in each of these instruments will be both objective and subjective and hopefully contribute something to all of our interests.

Thank you all for all your comments; I can promise that I will try to be as objective as possible when presenting my findings but in the end I'm just excited to have a couple of incredibly sounding guitars and getting them into the studio.
Have a great weekend y'all

M.

Not saying it happens here, but everytime anything John Mayer gets brought up, it's Mayer's Haters vs Mayer's Maniacs. Gear stuff not excluded, what has JM done to arrive to such mainac status over everything.

I'm sure if I played 1-83 and 1-500, there would only be a subtle difference, just my opinion, but I 've never played a MB for any long stretch of time, but own Team Builts and MIA builds....not a huge difference.....sorrry.

Assuming that you have not been away meditating in a monastery somewhere in the wilds of Tibet, I offer you his 'Rolling Stone' magazine cover and a selection of some of his choice public utterings as a first example. Failing any familiarization with the aforementioned, a bit of research is in order, and then perhaps we can continue.

Thanks for the smile Doc, I should have negotiated that into my compensation program.

I've read quite a few JM gear threads (fan of JM pop/blues stuff and have vageuly similar tone), but most enjoyable reading the passion some have for his tone/gear- it's unreal.

What I never understood, I own around 15-Strats, almost all of them have different pickups- yank sets left and right and use from different manufacturers- no knock on Fender (most have Fender), so do people really think a gear nut like JM only uses Fender made pickups in all zillion Strats he owns.....really??

Hey guys, funny the subject was picked up just in time. I got a flight into Houston tomorrow to pick up the Blck1 500 by myself cause I need for the gentlemen that was going to bring the Blck 1 to help me bring another new acquisition as well. I won't get into that one cause it's not a Fender.

SO I should be back with it Sunday and on Tuesday I have a two hour rehersal where I will get aqcuainted with the Black 1 500 and will report my findings; afterwards I will get it head to toe with the 83 and will see. Don't want to speculate on anything until I actually play both of them.

Sorry for the long wait but it's hard to get good guitars here in Mexico so for the most part one has to have a kind of do it by yourself attitude.

Cheers to everyone!

M.

That's a lot of Fender's pickups in a lot of Fender Strats - very cool.

Question: Does Fender do all everyday maintenence on everyone of JM's Fender Strat's that he owns? I expect not, if I'm correct, I take this is info on all Fender Strats JM owns having Fender pickups under the hood comes direct from your relationship from JM- the horses mouth?

I appreciate your time on this off beat topic.

It sounds like you have an idea in your head that he does not use Fender pickups.
