Speaking of using different woods, what is your opinion on using woods such as goncalo alves, ebony, pao ferro, walnut, padouk etc for necks.
I've always been a little skeptical about it.

Ebony is a great classic, hard but fragile, it gives smooth sweet sounds
Pao Ferro is like rosewood
Zebrawood is slightly brighter.
For the others... :?:

Yeah but I mean to really use them as neckwoods not just fingerboards.
Yes of course Ebony is a classic :). Although some don't like ebony on maple, including Chris Fleming.
I own a partscaster neck with a pao ferro fingerboard (maple neck) that I fool around with by trying out different nuts and tuners and stuff like that. Mine sounds more like maple then rosewood, to me off course

Mike have you ever heard of NZ swamp Kauri- most logs pre date the last ice-age.. a few makers here use it, it is expensive but very beautiful. They also have some amber certain logs that have insects trapped inside that have since been exstinct. I reckon it would be a cool Customshop run

That would have made a great cap for the T-Mobile Stratocaster.
