Has the guitar, since you got it, or just prior to your getting it, had a set-up of any kind, where the frets have been polished?
If a metal polish is used, no matter how carefully you wipe the frets and board afterwards, you'll still get dirty fingers from it for a little while!

It was set up before it was sent to me, and Im starting to think it maybe that... or unless my strings are reacting differntly with this strat's frets, since my other has smaller frets... but keep in mind, these are brand new strings, and I even washed my hands before I started playing.

Here's my fingers...

Yeah, you can see why I was like... what the heck?!

But what do you think Mike? Fret polish? I mean I cant figure it out, cleaned/wiped down the board, and changed the strings and then still got this... I'm just dumbfounded.

As a thought try playing fingerstyle for a bit and see if the right hand blacks up that way. If the right hand stays clean then you are looking at the fretboard.

It could be a bad batch of strings....

Its a bit left field but are you using any different soaps or powders that could be on your hands and reacting adversely?

Whatever it is dont get it wiped all over that guitar!

let us know how you get on, that is pretty extreme. But looking at you pinky it looks like there is a black line so most likely something to do with the strings and your skin.

Good luck

The problem with that though, is I use these strings all the time on my other Strat. And this happened when the guitar first arrived, and after I removed those strings, cleaned and wiped down the board and then put yet another set on (the photo is from after I did all that and then about 30 mins of playing). I can pick up my other strat with the same strings that were bought at the same time and it is fine, so that leaves out any reaction to the strings etc.

So I am thinking that the authorized custom shop dealer that I got this from put something on the neck and/or frets when they did the set up, and if not, then I have to think back to the shop itself.

The date on the COA is from this month, so there can only be so many things that is causing this.

Seems more like a stain, but it does wash off ok with soap... trying not to touch too many things with my hand after obviously...

I guess try taking the strings off and run your fingers up and down the fretboard and see if they darken. I've had this same thing happen, but not on a guitar that's anywhere near the quality of a Custom Shop.

Man, I'd hate to waste a 3rd set of new strings...

Mike, just heard back from the guys at the dealer where I got it from. They did not polish the frets or put anything on the neck. Guess they will be calling Fender. I'd still love to figure out what this stuff is though.

Seriously black fingers :(

Sorry for you, I hope you'll soon find out where this stain comes from.
