I see that the Clapton Artist strats ( and maybe all Clapton's) are urethane finishes. Is that the same Poly urethane finish as on the 70's guitars or is it a new thinner finish? Why urethane vs. nitro?

Wildwood carries a few nitro finished Clapton Strats. If they had a Daphne Blue Clapton in nitro finish I would have bought that one instead. Yeah, sounds superficial but I can live with a poly-coated Strat. My first Strat, a 1970 model, had a poly finish. That was the only guitar I had for 20 years. For all that time it done me good, pardner.

I see the 2011 Custom Deluxe has gone to Urethane vs nitro for the 2009.

I can't imagine its cost based at that level, so I guess Fender must be satisfied they've got the urethane finish right.

Nitro Celluloid does not last or protect as well as Poly or Urethane. My early 90s Martins has nitro and moisture/rain really played havoc on the neck and body. In most cases it left a stain that would eventually were out after a couple of months. Also, moisture from where my arm rests turn milky whitish. Not pretty at all. If you’re a heavy sweater the neck will get sticky. So I think Fender made a good choice going to Urethane on guitars that they wanted to last many years and look like new. Relics and Road worns would benefit from the nitro finish. Also, they may be complying with the 2006 RoHS laws restricting hazardous materials in US manufacturing.

That's probably salt residue from your sweat.

All I know is that the Satin WLS (Polyurethane) finish on my Strat neck is the best playing and looking and most durable I've ever played or seen. Feels amazing.

After going through 20 plus Clapton Strats, I love the feel of the poly. on my Daphne blue Clapton. It is so smoothe, even after playing for a long period of time
(the sweat issue).

I have a Martin MTV. At the top part of the neck the finish just fell off one day
