Great that you got lucky, and the one you wanted. Don't muck around with that setup. I've known some people to have floated the trem on the Clapton Strats. That 'stopped' block is part of the heart of its tone. I have an '89 Pewter. That's where I begin and end with the Claptons. But that's my gig. Enjoy!!
Doc

Thanks for the good advise, Doc. I'm sure they're set up that way for a reason. I sure as heck don't want to mess with the tone of this guitar. If I want to use a whammy bar, I've got the other two Strats.

Heres a couple of pics I just took. That's a Souldier brand strap, one they call "Eric Clapton Green" 8)

In the development of of the EC Signature Stratocaster from the Elite Series, back in the mid-eighties, Eric wanted to maintain the 'hardtail' design which was characteristic of the old Blackie, but retaining the 5-spring vibrato bridge which he felt lent something to the tone superior, to his ear, to a non-trem, string through body and bridge. I expect that the idea of putting a wood block between the mass block of the vibrato and the body wall was believed to add something additional to that system. The bridge is flat to the top as well. This has been the configuration since the first guitars of that series were produced. The only difference in electronics, between the Masterbuilt guitars(which are spec exact to EC's) and these is that the MB's have a standard tone pot instead of a TBX. The headstock in the MB's may also be unsigned, because Eric did away with that on his stage guitars years ago.

Did Eric's original MBs have the TBX? If so, when did switch? I have heard that he currently uses a regular tone pot on his MBs. Personally, I do like the TBX, especially for the cleaner tones. You can really wrangle a lot of good tones out of this guitar because of that feature. I would like to try one of the MBs with the regular tone pot, just to check the difference.

Clapton sure doesn't clutter his sound with a lot of devises. Strat-wah-amp is what he used last Saturday when I saw him.

He's playin in Vegas tonight. Normally I'm down there this time of year for the WCC basketball tournament. Decided not to go this year. Damned!

I do know that the red and pewter LS Strats which he played on stage before he ordered a black guitar, were the prototypes of the project. I would expect that, given the stage in development, there was a TBX in those. The transition may have come when the LS's were swapped out for the VN's. I'm sure someone out there may have the trivia on this. Perhaps Chromeface. He's usually numero uno with names, date, places, and photos, where EC is concerned.

I'm afraid all I'm getting from that auction is a printout of the catalog

EC actually signed it? Where? You pickin' that one up, Doc? :P

Yes, I am totally digging the new guitar. I played it yesterday through my full rig (pedalboard to '57 Twin Reissue) and it sounds great.

Ditto on the catalog. I order the booklet for my library. Good that you are enjoying that guitar. Thus far there hasn't been a disappointed voice in the lot of those on The Forum who purchased either the blue or the gray. With respect to your other question, Eric signed the headstock of every guitar offered for sale so there are two 'signatures' on the back of the headstock...the transfer, and his in ink.

All of Clapton's personal Strats made between 1986 and 2000 used the TBX. Even the blackie he currently uses for slide playing boasts that circuit.

BTW I suppose the TBX has been removed when Eric made the switch to the Vintage Noiseless pickups in March 2000.

Reasonable observation.
