Trying to figure out if a guitar at the local pawn shop is from the Custom Shop. I'm suspicious because the Custom Shop logo looks authentic but is a decal on top of the finish. There is a serial number on the back that reads: SZ 830846. It also states: Made in U.S.A. below the serial number, but they are both stickers on top of the finish. Never have seen this on a CS guitar. The neck plate is blank and the neck pocket has a stamp that states March 2003. The Fender logo on the headstock appears to be correct.

This could just be a pretty decent parts guitar. It's finished in Lake Placid Blue with a mint green guard and VN pickups. The tuners appear to be Klusen's and the vintage saddles say Fender.

The pawn shop said they'd let me have it for $1,500 down from the $1,899 asking price. Did not ask to see the case. Thoughts?

PICS OF THE GUITAR ARE ON THE LAST POST.

How did it feel and sound through an amp?

It was a very solid feeling and playing guitar. Did not plug in because of busy Saturday and configuration of the pawn shop, however it sounded great unplugged. Definitely a good tone to it without amplification. Wish I would have taken a picture with my phone. Oh well.

Might want to grab a shot of the back of the headstock and post it here. Maybe some of the experts here can then tell you if the logo is legit.

I'll swing by after work and do that if the guitar is still available. From what I've gathered the SZ serial numbers are for Signature Series guitars. Does anybody know if SZ serial numbers would be issued through the Custom Shop?

Yes, by all means, if possible.

Sz8 I think normally means a signature series made in 2008 however I'd expect it to have the artists signature on the peghead. I'd be careful about a purchase until you determine exactly what you have.
I have custom shops with R or C or just a number...... :D

Are the serial numbers usually on the back of the headstock? That isn't the case with most of the CS guitars I've been in contact with. Also, that doesn't match the stamp I saw in the neck pocket, which said March 2003. I'm going to call Fender today and see if they can help with the identification of this guitar. Stand by.

OK...talked to Fender and the serial number I gave him was not in their data base. I'm going to go back to the pawn shop to make sure I didn't write it down wrong. He did say Custom Shop decals on top of the finish have been used in the past, which I thought was interesting. If I can get a picture of the back of the headstock to send it to him, he would try and verify it, which I thought was cool. I'll post it here too.

We've never used CS decals on top of the finish.

Good thing you're asking the questions before you buy!

Possibly an artist series non custom shop guitar if that. As you've suggested a few numbers stuck on a headstock is not enough to confirm what you have seen is even this.
The custom shops I have have a custom shop decal on the back of the headstock and serial on the neck plate. I'd be asking where is the case and if a custom shop the certificate... :D

Thanks for the feedback Mike. That's the definitive word.

The pawn shop person said I could come by and take some pics of the guitar, so I'll do that after work and post here. I'll ask about the case and documents too. More to follow.

OK. Took some pics and sent them to Jeremy at Fender, who's helping identify what I have. I'm trying to figure out how to share pictures here. I may have to wait until I go home and upload them to a hosting site so I can get a URL to share. My work blocks access to all the photo sharing sites.

Would not be surprised if it's a pretty good parts-caster. If so, I'd like some feedback on a fair price for it.

I'll post a follow-up after I hear from Jeremy.

Here's the feedback from Fender regarding the, "Pawn Shop Prize."

Hey there,

Thanks for sending in the pictures. From what I can see this is a parts guitar. The serial is not on file and it should be around a 2008. The Logo on the back of the headstock does not look like ours.

There is just nothing really to confirm or deny this is a true Fender. My gut says it has Fender parts but not a Custom Shop.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards,
Jeremy York

It still is a decent guitar. What's a fair price for a parts-caster? I'll try to post links to pictures later tonight.
