In my opinion, the Fender Custom Shop has made great strides in the art and science of buidling instruments similulating natural wear, use and abuse of an instrument. You can order a custom Fender instrument as NOS (New Old Stock), CC (Closet Classic), Relic and Heavy Relic. However, I feel it would be helpful for Fender to develop and share with us a common language or terminology for describing the types and degrees of relic treatment available. I understand that each relic'd instrument is a one-of-kind original creation. But much like the color chart, it would be helpful to me as a customer to have photos and descriptions of the type of relic'ing options available. A menu of aging options...

For example, I like (and want) instruments that appear to be highly worn from decades of normal playing, but that do not look like they've been chewed up by a wood chipping machine. I have a 30-year-old Music Man Bass that has yellowed over time, but shows few serious scars. In contrast, Custom Shop Heavy Relic Necks (from the back) look like they've simply been dipped in a vat of acid.

What I'm finally getting around to saying is that I'd like more control over the range of relic'ing choices available and would appreciate posted photographs on your website representing particular features and the various degrees of relic treatment which could be mixed and matched on a special custom ordered bass or guitar. And, can this feature be built into an on-line instrument builder simulation tool?

The best way to get what you really want especially in regards to relicing is to order a Masterbuilt instrument. You can spec out every detail and the builder will relic the instrument to your specs.
