I have read that part of the reasoning of getting a CS relic'ed guitar is to get the sound of that guitar closer to an actual old guitar - different finishes and treatment of same affecting the sound.

Is that stuff of urban legends or is there some truth in that?

that's no urban legend, the finishing process is exactly the same as it was back then (using nitro), and if it's relic'd, the lack of paint will allow the body to resonate more freely.

however, most Heavy Relic guitars don't have that much paint missing, and it's usually on the back that there is the biggest "hole" in the finish. it might affect the way the guitar sounds but clearly not as much as on let's say... the #1 or BLCK1 replicas.

depending on the models, the necks are also "treated" to feel like vintage necks, without any lacquer left.

Relic have a different, slower drying lacquer allowing the process (my luthier's opinion..)

I've two 60's relic strats and a 60's nos strat, all with the same pickups. The relics sound different to the nos, don't ask me why? I prefer the relic 's.
