I would suggest a Custom Deluxe. everyone else feel free to chime in and agree or shoot me down  at least that's the current model I would point a Plus series enthusiast to...

I agree! Though you might also look at the American Deluxe models as well, if you are looking for H-S-S setup.

I have the hss setup now: love it. I'm not sure how a telecaster would sound in comparison.

The custom deluxe tele this year has a stacked humbucker and sounds awesome, check the video on the Custom Shop site. I have my local shop tracking me down one...

You'rr starting with an HSS configuration but it ends there. Lace Sensors are engineered differently from conventional pickups. You ought to compare the specs of the pickups in your Ultra with what's available today. The Custom Deluxe has three different types of pickups and I don't notice a bridge HB in their specs for 2010. 2011 may be different but the specs are not online, so far as I can establish. The American Deluxe now sports N3's which are noiseless and claimed to be an improvement on the SCN's but so far I haven't read any rave reviews. Samarium and cobalt are reputed to have excellent electrical properties and are perhaps better. Lace Sensors are not influenced by magnetic field damping so you're pretty much free to put 'em where you like. Your Ultra also had a coil splitting switch if memory serves me. Hence, the word 'like' needs to be eliminated from your query. Your search is just beginining pilgrim. First decide on the mission in terms of the kind of music you're prinicipally going to play. If you're going Custom Shop, why not go all the way, design your dream guitar, and have it Masterbuilt, and done your way, that is,........if you're ready.

Doc

Excellent point about the Lace Sensors Doc, and because of the way they are made they are the one pup you get the best results from by raising them as high to the strings as possible. I have been seeing a lot of Ultra, Plus post in the week since I am back. That ax (The Ultra)is still an enigma to me since you just do not see many of them on the second hand market, and when one does pop up on ebay you would think they would sell for more than they do, though to be fair so many have been modded. My 95 Blue Burst is still the best built production model Fender I own, they were just really built so well and the finish on them are beautiful. I think there must be a thousand of them under beds and in closets.lol

Xhefri's our 'Man From Havana' with respect to the Plus Series. I'm gonna point him towards this thread. Perhaps he can offer something specific for the OP.

Hey dkelban, DrZZ mentioned the thread to me. I take it you still have your 91 Ultra? If so are you just looking for something like it yet a bit different or newer or ??? There really isn't anything made by Fender right now, short of a special order from the Custom Shop, that comes close to the old Ultra Strats. Unless maybe a special order of the DX with Lace Sensors, and i was told by the people at Lace that Fender does still offer the Laces on such orders but just no longer promotes them since they have their own Noiseless Pickup line....

The there are options like this, which is a custom build based on a great guitar:

Getting a response from Jeff to a question concerning the Plus Series guitars is equivalent to one from Stephen Hawking on the subject of Black Holes.

Asking a question like this is like asking Leonard on the Big Bang Theory if he wants to date a girl.......getting an answer just follows suite!
