Necks were offered in four neck widths, one a size narrower and two wider than normal (coded alongside the date on the neck-end stamp as A, B, C, D, from the narrowest to the widest).

That would also be an early "round-lam" board, as they started to appear after July '62. Prior to that the boards were cut flat, or "slab!"

they were very thin, (you refret you get directly to the maple !) so later they made them a little thicker

What about the "A" over the "B" stamp is that common or possible.

Easy to check. Just measure the nut width. Looks weird to me. Here's some additional info:

There are four separate codes on the stamp to identify the neck.
- The model code (3 for Telecaster, 2, 13, or 22 for Stratocaster)
- The first three letters of the month (DEC for December)
- The year of production (62 for 1962)
- The neck width (B for standard width 1 5/8)
Telecaster always used a number 3 for the model code.

Stratocasters have three different codes:
- 2 for small peg guitars made from 1962 through 1965
- 13 for big peg guitars made through 1968
- 22 for big peg guitars made from 1969 through 1973

Here are some of the model codes:
- 2 = Stratocaster (1962 thru 1965)
- 3 = Telecaster
- 4 = Jazzmaster (1962 thru 1966)
- 5 = Precision Bass
- 7 = Jazz Bass
- 13 = Stratocaster (1966 thru 1968)
- 19 = Jazzmaster (after 1967)
- 22 = Stratocaster (1969 thru 1973)

The nut width is right for an 'A'. Its just the 'A' over the 'B' makes it seems like it could be a 'B' neck that someone just reshaped and marked an 'A' over. I wasnt sure if Fender would take a 'B' neck reshape it and handwrite 'B' over it. The rest of the neck stamp makes sense for what its supposed to be.
