Hi,

I just got a CS '65 neck to use on a Strat I'm building. The waterslide logo is on top of the headstock lacquer and seems to have no lacquer covering at all. I actually nudged it when re-stringing and knocked it out of shape. I pushed it back but now it's wrinkled. Is this the standard or vintage way of applying these? I'm thinking about shooting a few coats of nitro over it just to keep it in place. picture below:

OK...this is weird. I changed strings and didn't notice until I was done that the "Custom Contour Body" decal had ripped in half with one of the pieces sliding a quarter inch away from the other one. These waterslides appear to be resting on a bed of soft jelly or glue that permits them to slide around without too much pressure. The neck was made in 2002. At the rate I change strings, these will be destroyed in a month or so. Is this something that could be corrected by the CS?

G'day Kyle, I am by no means an expert. I have been watching your thread, hoping that someone in the know would respond. I do own one CS Strat, a fairly recent one.
I have been around Fenders for about 30 yrs and I must say that I've never seen anything like this. If it were me alarm bells would be ringing by now.
Even if the CS were replicating an old method, there is no way that would happen to one of their products. These guys really know what they're doing.
Did you say "Custom Contour Body" ???? Surely that should read "Original Contour Body".
How about the Custom Shop logo on the rear of the headstock? Is this the same? I don't think they ever just stick those on top.
My gut feeling is that your neck is fake, however I am likely wrong. My post will bring the thread up the list, where it may receive the attention it deserves, from an expert.
Good luck mate. ......Mark.

Thanks for the bump Mark. I misquoted the decal. It does read "Original Contour Body" as do my other Strats which I know to be legit. I'm still pretty sure this neck is the real deal. The quality is incredible. It features a round laminated fingerboard which makes it even more difficult to construct. I would expect most fakes to be slabs. The CS logo on the back of the headstock appears correct and is buried under the lacquer coat. The COA and neckplate appear 100% correct and Fender did verify the serial and model with me through email. I think there is just some issue with the adhesive.....and perhaps the way it was stored??

In any event....I hope I can get it corrected enough to last without getting completely destroyed. Here is another picture:

To answer your question, yes a decal on a '65 would be over the finish. It wasn't until '68 that the decal started being applied under the finish.

That said, it shouldn't move that easily. But anything could happen with storage, movement, it could have been exposed to something that degrades the adhesive, any number of factors. If the workmanship is CS quality and Fender says the numbers are legit, I would say you just ended up with an unfortunate accident.

The decal is the same way on my CS '56. I've not had the same issue though.
