I have a '66 from the Custom Shop... not the limited edition one you describe, but I don't think there'd be much of a difference apart from the colour (mine's teal green).

I'm glad they reissued the 1966 models (although they've just stopped making them, it appears), as it makes a change from '57s and '62s all the time.

I haven't the time for a detailed rundown here... the neck has a real heft to it; it's quite wide-feeling for a 7.25" radius, and that combined with the C-shaped back gives you the "baseball bat" feel. I loved it right away, it just feels good to hold (and to play!).

The 3-way selector may take a bit of getting used to, but balancing it in the "2" and "4" positions is part of the fun...there are slight variations as you move the switch, and there is a definite "sweet spot". You could always fit it with a 5-way switch, anyway.

The pickups really add to this guitar's charm...if I remember when I get home I'll dig up a link to a good summary of the CS '65s, but in a nutshell if you want to give yourself the best shot at getting a Hendrix-y chime circa Electric Ladyland these are the closest thing you'll get in the pickup department. Apparently they give out a more "piano-like" tone (their output is significantly lower than other '60s-style pickups from the CS)...I can't crank my amp up enough to really put it through its paces (too many small children at home), but from the quieter playing I do I can confirm that they have a lovely sound, particularly for clean work where you want it to break up a bit if you play harder (think Little Wing).

The strats of '65-'66 apparently had these slightly different pickups, and Hendrix supposedly used '65s for most of his recorded work. I know the '69 white "Woodstock" strat is more commonly associated with him, but that's just because there were a lot of pictures taken of him at Woodstock!
Robin Trower (again supposedly) has said that of three favourite strats he's played over the years, two were '66 models.

So..in case you can't tell, I'm very happy with my '66...love it to bits. I'd recommend one to anyone, especially if you like the music of the late '60s. The Custom Shop has done a great job of nailing this particular year.

Also... the nitrocellulose finish is nice to have (if you're into that sort of thing); they stopped that for the '69 instruments. In the stats for this guitar it says "nitrocellulose over acetate" (or some other plastic-sounding substance), but that other material is just the metallic paint (what used to be called "Lucite" in car colours..."Duco" referred to the non-metallic, nitrocellulose-based colours).

I'd buy one at that price, definitely! In Australian dollars, that translates to about 10% less than I paid for mine. Current second-hand price (through dealers) seems to be around US $2500. If you can get a limited-run piece for that kind of money, even better.

/edit ..here's that link I mentioned earlier. This guy takes his pickups very seriously!
