Hey everyone i have decided to buy a new guitar, probably not a custom shop guitar but then again maybe i will, one things for sure, it's not a fender but a gretsch duo jet.

Gretsch offers a beautiful Cadillac Green version with gold harware which i think is very striking:

And then there's the black one (no pun intended):
http://www.gretschguitars.com/products/ ... 2400411806

The one i intended to go for was the cadillac green version but then i found out it has a urethane finish and the black DSV model has a nitro finish and a stationary handle.
There is also a small chance i'll go nuts and buy a Stephen Stern master built version, but my master built money will probably be spent on a stratocaster or a square-neck tele in the future.
I'm asking on this forum because i'm very familiar with these forums and a lot of you guys who browse these forums have a number of guitars, finisihed in nitro or urethane and i know that many of you here have a lot of expertise on these matters.
So is a nitro finish really that better sound wise? or do a lot of guys choose for it just to be sure?
I want a cadillac green version because so many have it in black these days, not only Jeff Beck :P
It's a pretty tough decision.

Jossett, I can't answer the nitro/urethane finish questions, but I know Wildwood has a few in stock and they can probably answer your questions. Here's a link to what they have in stock now: http://wildwoodguitars.com/electrics/gretsch/

Well i won't be buying it there because FMIC does not allow them to sell to european custumors. But do you think they wouldn't mind to answer a few questions anyway?

Give them a call, can't hurt to pick their brains a little. Check some of Fender's showcase dealers for some used ones too, I think they can be shipped outside the USA. Gretsch's Stephen Stern is supposed to be an outstanding builder.

Or be cheeky and don't tell them that you're from outside the USA...no I would never endorse such activity...

No seriously i wouldn't do that, But if I want a masterbuilt gretsch maybe the can make an exception cause we don't have any showcase dealers here in the netherlands, not that i know of anyway.

Personally I prefer the poly finish over nitro. There's no difference in sound and the nitro finish is very fragile. Poly will stand up to a ding much better than nitro and poly shines up a whole lot better.

Thanks for the advice! Urethane it is! but I have to say that new CS line up was almost making me change my mind!
What a cool strat pro they put out! but I already have fenders and no gretsch yet and I need to have one!

Just for your info, the gold plating on my Cadillac green peeled off on top of the Bigsby arm, which, alas, seems a common scourge with gold plated Bigsby trems.
Seems to be a chemical reaction with the inside plush coating of the case.

Wow alain thank you so much, so that's why the masterbuilt versions don't have gold hardware, that is some real good info. Guess i'll go for the black one afterall.

I Have Heard That A Nitro Finish Has A Warmer Tone Vs A Poly Finish. The Poly Will Probably Stand Up Better Over The Years But I'd Rather Have A Richer Tone.

What you heard is wrong. My '78 Strat originally had a poly finish but I had it refinished in nitro. There is no difference in tone.
