I was wondering why the fender custom shop is so close guarded with what's under the hood on specs with tributes, custom runs, etc...

When I ordered my custom martin, I was very involved in every little detail to the specs of the guitar.

I was just over at gibson's site browsing and was suprised how detailed their website is when describing about signature models, customs, etc. Things like pickup material, paint and finish process, etc.

I'm not trying to create waves, but was wondering when the website launches will there be more individual custom options or details on limited editions that the custom shop puts out?

Some Companies need to explain what's the difference within very similar looking models to justify their marketing.

When you buy a "Play Loud" Yngwie Malmsteen Tribute Strat, you don't worry about such details.
Just my two cents.

From a business standpoint, high returns on capital are associated with a durable competitive advantage. In Fender's case, the competitive strategy that provides advantage is brand strength.

Where there is proprietary knowledge that supports the brand, it makes sense for the company to keep that under wraps.

As Mike has noted, there are a number of opportunistic competitors making fake Strats and Teles. As a business, why in the world would you want to help these people?

Comparing a Martin acoustic to a Fender electric and the specs that are guarded or released in either doesn't make sense to me :?

On a Martin acoustic, chosing woods for the back, top, sides, nut material, width of neck, tuner style and ornamentation is part of the specs, but having Martin describe their process of cutting and assembling the minute details that differentiate a Martin from a Taylor or Collings or Lowden is akin to asking Fender how their pick-ups are wound and how do they match components for their instruments personality ??? :?

I named two big companies that are already doing it in regards to paul's comments.

Look, goto Martin or Gibson website and pick a signature custo shop model. All the specs are laid out and easy to read. You don't even know if you're getting a bone nut or synthetic with a tribute or custom strat...

No one's asking how many winds it took a pickup to make it, but wood species, how many pieces, cloth wire etc, are details most people like to know about. I'm typing on a phone here, hope it comes out ok..

If you want to specify how your guitar is built, buy a CS Masterbuilt.

All of Clapton's personal guitars feature a 22-fret maple neck with a pronounced soft V profile based on one of his Martin dreadnoughts. Eric is a huge fan of the early Martins, he felt their necks very comfy.

Huh? That neck shape is based on a 57 Strat.
