so I went to guitar center to look at the les pauls... i know... its a fender forum, but since everyone said to look at the LPs I figured I'd give you a follow-up.

I played 2 variations on '60s plaintops. I like the darkburst the best but the '60 models had the worst tone.

In regards to the '58 and the '59, the two sounded identical and the necks were very similar. the only difference I could perceive when playing was that the frets seemed bigger on the '59... at least my fingers got caught on them when sliding down a string.

I have seen some really nice flametops, but for me, I don't think I will be able to justify the price of entry if it sounds the same. I'll be honest though... I'm not convinced I liked the relic LPs more than my current LP classic. I changed the PU's in my LP to Tom Anderson...that may make the difference... Next time I'm going to take my LP up there and compare the two side-by-side. If I think the tone is reasonably close, I'll probably keep my LP and get the '68 strat. Though eventually, I'd like an R6

In fender terms, there is definately a step up between an american standard and a custom shop... In Gibson terms, I'm not convinced yet, but I'm keeping an opened mind on it.

I can't explain it, but I'm GASin' for fender custom shops. My style of playing right now is more of a strat style. I can justify the minor variations in the fenders. Maybe next year I'll be on an LP kick and have to have a few different models... The only LP I am really GASin' for is the silverburst and I think I missed out on it. The others are pretty standard models I think I will be able to get those anytime.

I've been learning to play train kept a rollin by aerosmith and I just love the look of Joe Perry's strat... http://thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=192202.
