Hey All -

Here's a sneak peek at a custom Fender built just for the NasH2O Auction to support Nashville Flood Relief... this guitar is pretty amazing, Lucite body and filled with, not just water, but flood water from the Cumberland River. The auction ends on January 8th, 2011. Bid here - http://nash2o.moontoast.com/FenderGuitars/Luci.

An extremely rare "build" for the makers of the vaunted Stratocaster and Telecaster, this guitar was designed and built by Fender's R&D department. A solid block of Lucite was shaped as a solid guitar body, then "channeled" to create hollow spaces that would hold water. Fender Nashville employees collected water from the Cumberland and from a long-dry farm pond that was filled by the flood, and the mix was sent to the builders in California. While heavier than most guitars used for stage or studio, "Luci" is a fully-functioning Fender Esquire model, with a '50s re-issue neck and vintage-style pickup and hardware. Fender "one-offs" are built occasionally, typically as commemorative pieces for major events, artistic achievements or large charity efforts. But Fender's Mike Bump, who designed the Nash2o guitar, believes it to be especially unusual:

"We build a Lucite guitar every once in a great while, but I don't recall seeing - or even hearing of - anything filled with water. And the fact that is is actual water from the flood, well, I can say for certain nothing like this has ever come out of Fender."

Gruhn, widely acknowledged as the world's leading expert on vintage and collectible guitars, agrees that "Luci" is a rare bird:

"This is the kind of guitar that collectors will salivate over. For anyone interested in Fenders, in the legacy and the special, hard-to find pieces from over the last sixty years, this is a very big deal. It's the kind of thing that you'll hear about over the years, perhaps as it changes hands or appears in galleries or collections. We've had some special pieces in the auctions, thanks to the generosity of many artists. We have Les Pauls from Peter Frampton, some wonderful, special guitars from Vince Gill, and Brad Paisley, and Keith Urban. Studio tools from session players like Brent Mason, Brent Roway, Kevin Grantt... the list goes on and on. But this may well be the star of the whole show. It truly is something you won't see anywhere else."

I suppose they added chlorine to the water, otherwise...

I have always been warned to not touch flood waters as it could have Cholera in it.

I don't know "bout this Lucy.....

It seems to me that if that's flood water in there it should be at least a little murky. Unless they filtered it, but in that case they could have just filled it with tap water.

Edit: Ok nevermind, now I see some sediment in the bottom.

Luckily, it looks like the water is sealed pretty tightly and shouldn't be going anywhere.

The fact that it could be the only Lucite Fender filled with water, let alone filled with waters from the historic flood... is pretty cool!!

Yours if you wish, but nothing collectible as such.
Gruhn is a "has been " sorry to say that. He is the end of an era.
He is trying to survive in a world he doesn't control anymore
I bought from him in the past, not so happy about my purchase and the way things were handle by his arrogant staff. Internet killed him, I mean his dominant position He'll never recover.
And this guitar is good enough for a charity sale.
Fair.

won't that water evaporate over time or if it is stored in the wrong conditions though?

As It's not pure water, the water will turn rotten.

Isn't the water festering over time dependent upon oxygen?
Isn't the body sealed so that once oxygen is consumed by whatever microscopic bacterial organism then the process will cease.

Can we call it Uncle Fester ??

But with this theme I would prefer a Lava lamp effect

By the way how much does it weigh ??

This could start a trend in guitar making. I want a Jack Daniel's filled guitar, or better still... A Custom Shop "Eric Clapton" that is actually filled with Cocaine.... After he plays the song... he smashes the guitar and everyone gets high... Complementary straws are an extra charge.. lol Just think... nobody would complain about how much the guitar weighed... If anything they would complain that it was too light... The first guitar sold by the custom shop by the gram... woohoooo!
