Can anyone tell me what pre-amp is used in the Andy Summers Tele. I have home built Tele that is set up with much of the same specs as his Tele, but I haven't purchased the pre-amp yet.

As you may know, FMIC doesn't give specs on their Tribute Guitars, same for the owners.
Sorry.

You can buy the Fender Clapton 25db midboost to install in your guitar, but first have a look at the December issue of Premier Guitar for an article on it. I can't tell you that's the unit Fender employed, and I do not believe it was the hardware installed in Summer's guitar at the time he acquired it as such.

Thanks for all of the insight.

I'm aware of Fender's rules and well so be it.

I was thinkingabout using the Clapton Cercuit, but my local Lutier had said something about it not really working well with the pickups I have in the guitar already.

I own a Clapton Strat and love it. The CS is by far my most useful and played guitar that I own.

Gold Lace Sensors, SCN's, or VN's as far as single coils. You're looking at a humbucker in the neck position on the Summers, if memory serves me, which would require a modification of the Clapton board. Have a read in Premier Guitar and see if they offer any hints as to modifying it to your needs.

Google is your buddy. I searched "pre amp summers telecaster" and got several bits of info, including a very clear picture of the preamp in someone's Summers.

Don't mean to release trade secrets. But this seemed public info to me on the interwebs. I won't go so far as to provide you a link, but I'm sure you can find this stuff on your own.

Sounds like a really great tele project. Good luck!

Guess he found the same door I did. There's a rather important tidbit behind one of them.

A petty owner I think, but it will never be as The Real Thing.
So I'm cool on that stuff.
End.

The preamp we used was tweaked pretty severely, but any preamp will work to some extent.

Alain has the right approach. That's why it says, "When You're Ready" partly. You can improvise, and many do.

The Clapton Circuit works fine with regular humbuckers as well.

Richie Sambora's original signature model uses the Clapton Boost to fatten up the things a lot; the result is a fat screaming lead sound from the DiMarzio PAF Pro humbucker bridge pickup. This guitar has an active/passive push-push switch to turn off the preamp.

The MDX was developed by John Carruthers and James Demeter, founder and CEO of Demeter Amplification.

James offers a similar circuit called the "Fat Control", which can be found on several Tyler guitars (Studio Elites, Classics, Tylerbasters, Mongeese, Ultimate Weapons).

I'm not asking for specs here or anything, just wondered - what does the preamp on the Andy Summer Tele do?

Is it a boost like on the Clapton or does it do something else?

It's proported to do just that. I've seen the one in the CS guitar pictured elsewhere, and it's the MDX circuit board with, according to the narrative, an R5 resistor removed.

I move to nominate 'Chromeface" as the official Forum Archivist. 8) The stuff he has hidden in his closet never ceases to amaze me.
