Can someone describe how these sound in comparison to other pickups? What tonal qualities would you say they possess or lack? And How versatile would you say they are?

Thank you!
Daniel

Hey Daniel,

Instead of ordering, I ended up buying a really nice Closet Classic CS '56 Strat from Dave's that has the Custom '50s pickups.

I also have a CS '60 Strat that has the Custom '60s pickups, so I have been comparing the two.

It should be noted that the '56 Strat has a maple fingerboard, while the '60 Strat has a rosewood board, so some of the tone differences may, in part, reflect the wood.

Also, the '60 has a RWRP middle pickup, while the '56 does not. This seemed to make a difference. My perception was that the '50s pickups in positions 2 and 4 were more alive, while the hum canceled '60s in the same positions were quieter and a little more hollow sounding, if that makes sense.

Overall, the '50s pickups seemed brighter, woodier, and more in your face. The '60s sounded glassier, a little darker, and prettier in tone.

Reflecting our set list, in practical terms I thought that the '50s would do our rockabilly stuff really well, while the '60s would do surf better (particularly in the middle position).

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Paul

I have a 2001 56 NOS CS, comparing it to my 2001 MIM with SCN's, they are completely different.
Vintage sound, meaning they are great for rythm work yet will distinguish themselves when demand is to wail. A fuzzier, woollier tone, the brown sound, I have found that they work best with an all tube setup, especially matched to a vintage amp.
I run clean, no effects other than a 1960's Vox Wah-Wah V846.
The 56 NOS is prone to noise when run thru effects, I know a noise gate would solve the problem, but the signal decays the more stuff is plugged in.

Also if you go to www.frettedamericana.com website, Phil-X demo's many vintage 54, 56, 57, 63 etc.. strats and tele's as well as vintage Gibsons.
Granted those are the original vintage guitars, but it gives you a good base as to what sound you may be searching for. He does also demo the occasional Fender Custom Shop.
