Hi everyone,

I am quite new here so first let me say hi :)
I was wondering about terminology used for custom shop made guitars in Fender Custom Shop, so here is my questions:
What are the differences you found in terms of quality, people and materials used to build each of these guitar types ?
Are there other from Custom Shop that I forget here about?

Thanks a lot,
Ben

This is the general outline:

Team Built instruments are the first level custom instruments offered by the Fender Custom Shop. These instruments are built by some of Fender’s finest builders, and apprentices of the Master Builders. Each instrument is inspected, set up, and signed off by the Fender Custom Shop staff insuring that you are getting the absolute best Fender can build.

Team Built
• Specific instruments that are offered in a static specification and price with no customer defined options. (example: Artist Signatures, Time Machine, Custom Collection runs).
• Built by the entire “Team” of FCS staff. They are responsible for realizing the final instrument.

Team Built Custom
• These are Team Built instruments with minor customer defined options (example: color changes, radius changes, pickup changes, hardware changes).
• Changes are unobtrusive and allow the artist/dealer/consumer to specify personal choices in the instrument with a moderate up-charge .

Master Built
• One on one service with a Master Builder.
• Unlimited options.
• The Master Builder has the sole responsibility to ensure that the instrument is built to the artist or consumer’s specifications.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Mike,

This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for, thanks a lot for taking the time to answer me on this :)

One last question though: what does a "Team built Limited Edition" then refers to? Is it a small amount of guitars that will not be built again later on? How many items a "Limited Edition" is usual then?

Cheers,
Ben

you can puntualize this point ? for example........... if i buy a john cruz masterbuilt.... the guitar is made only by cruz himself... or is only ispected and built up his responsability and his equipe of builder? just for clarity... masterbuilt are built only by masterbuilder ?

Great info, I didn't know this.

What still is a mystery to me is the pricing on the relics vs the NOS's. Why are the relics more expensive whilst they're full of dents and wear (don't get me wrong, I like the relics better). However, is it true a used NOS sells for less than a used relic, since you can hardly tell a relics wear after a few years.

People always tend to buy used NOS's in 'mint' condition. Wouldn't a used NOS with all the dents and wear become relic then?

Feel free to correct my understanding about this situation, it's what I came across a lot lately.

There is more work involved to create a relic. Higher skilled labor content should cost more.

That I understand. I just don't get passed the part that a NOS drops in value so much when they have dents and stuff. It's not that people should buy a guitar with in the back of their head thinking, when I'm going to sell this beauty, it better be worth selling it. But with this thought I lean towards purchasing a relic since it would not matter if there's an extra dent/ some extra wear.

It just crossed my mind. Kinda wanted to hear peoples thoughts on this.

I have sold both relics and NOS guitars (it took me a while to figure out the specs I prefer). These guitars all sold for about a 40% discount to the price new. Same experience with amps. Vintage is a different story. Some day these guitars will be vintage, but right now newer guitars take a pretty good hit when resold, just like a car or boat.

I see, that makes sense actually.

"it took me a while to figure out the specs I prefer" - interesting. Which one did you prefer in the end if I may ask?

Everyone likes different things. For me, I prefer 9.5 inch radius, medium jumbo frets, 10/’56 “Boat Neck” “V” and 1965 “C” neck shapes, vintage style machine heads and bridges, modern wiring (both Strats and Teles), and lightweight guitars. There are a lot of good pickup sets. I have a couple of nice Relics. For what it's worth, I'm ordering a Masterbuilt Strat and it will be NOS.

Mike- I own a master built tele, made by Chris Fleming. Typically what would that mean? Would Chris have shaped the neck? Painted and relic'ed the body? Wood selection? To what extent does "Master Built by" mean the hands-on work was done by such and such? Thanks for your time.
