I decided to give the dryer a go. I attached a box outside my house to the dryer vent, put in the body, lots of bounce. I wasn't convinced that the cool air setting would do anything so I went to warm air. I ran it for a total of about 6 hours. The guitar came out smelling pretty good, a lot like fresh laundry - although with my nose on the body I can still detect a trace of something else, at least in some places. My guess is that the laundry effect will go away in a few days. Still at this point it's not that bad.

I wonder if you can conceive of stripping the body and getting a new finish for it. Do you love this guitar the way it is? Or do you think it is folly to alter a custom shop? Would you consider selling it as is and simply fixing the problem that way? I doubt you can get rid of the smell, even if you re-finish it! Something went wrong. I believe in bewitchment, I have testified to unbearable stenches in country houses where weird things happen. The stench would come between 8 and 9 pm, focalized in a certain spot in the living room. Nothing seemed to work. I would find someone to take interest in the guitar. They say the universe is a first-class place. You surely deserve a custom shop that you are totally in love with, it´s the only reason I got mine. All the best man.

So we just passed the 1 year mark since I started this thread. The guitar is back together and I've been playing it. The setup could use a slight tweak but it's not bad. Sadly, the guitar still stinks. It's not as bad as when I started but the smell is still there. I wouldn't want
to put it in a case becasue I fear it would be quickly ruined.

Soooooo, does anyone have any ideas on how to unstink a guitar?

What does the stink actually smell like? Maybe a mouse got betwixt the case linings and died and now is mummified and stinking.

Try taking the lining out and spraying the inside of the case with a "reodorant", not a "de-odorant.
Reodorants bond with the stench molecules and destroys them, or something like that.

Or, an ezymatic odor eliminator, which eliminates the source of odors.

United Laboratories makes a something called "Liqui-zime Odor Eliminator United 455".
Nice fresh Cimmaron scent, too. It comes concentrated and you need to dilute it, but you could go straight with it and declare war on that stench. You could soak the back of the padding of the panel inserts on the case, too. I just don't see how this wouldn't work. If that doesnt work, I would burn the case.

It works on human, animal, and trash related smells.

It does have a rancid smell. Mummified stink may be on the right track, John Page thought that it might be the hide glue that sometimes had problems in early custom shop cases if it wasn't cured right. The guitar hasn't been in the case for over a year now. The case is so bad that my wife complains when I leave it out in the back yard to air out.

I think the case is a right off. I'd be happy just to get a bit more of the smell off the guitar. I'll check out the exymatic odor eliminator though. At one point I sprayed the whole guitar with fabreez and left if dry on the guitar - it wasn't a pretty sight. At this point there's a blend of smells on the guitar, fabreez, polish, rancid. It's much better than it was a year ago, it might be time to try bringing it in the living room and seeing how my wife reacts.

Wow, i actually read this whole entire thread because it was just that interesting...and funny i might add haha! I really feel bad for you. Too bad 'cause that is a nice guitar. When i bought a Strat '03 the case had a Playdough, you know that kids Plasticine stuff. But never have i heard of a "Smelly" guitar. I wish i could help you but it seems you have tried almost everything. Best of luck

Donn

Well the good news is that I've been playing it more. It still has THE smell
if you put your nose up to it but it doesn't leave a bad a smell on my
clothes that my wife notices and then complains about "that" guitar anymore.

The action still isn't perfect, I'll try tweaking the truss rod again next time
I change strings. I have a better appreciation of bullet truss rods these days.

Now that I'm playing it more I notice an old problem that's still there. The
middle pickup cuts out from time to time. If I give it a rap it comes back.
I remembered this problem when I put the guitar back together and I thought
the middle pickup wires might be shorted sometimes by the cavity shielding
so I put some tape in there to insulate it but I guess that's not it. Maybe there's
a bad joint or maybe the coils are shorting. I'll take a closer look when I change
the strings.

Actually, the intermittent pickup should be covered in my new extended lifetime
warranty. Hmmmm. I could pack up the guitar in the OLD SMELLY CASE and
send it back to Fender for warranty work. Now there's an idea!

John

I would try puting a few dryer sheets in the case. This worked for me a while back. Now I just keep a dryer sheet in the case.

Great thread. Loved the drama. Just soak it BBQ Sauce and write a song about. :P

I had a similar problem with a Yamaha case a few decades ago. It stunk like rancid meat. It was the glue. I got a replacement case from Yamaha, same smell. I $@!&#* (polite, griped), they found a case that didn't stink!

I've heard that a 50/50 mix of baking soda and cinnamon, liberally sprinkled in the case and left for a while, will get rid of the smell!
