Throw out that case. Seriously. Get an cheapie gig bag with deodorizer. Put your guitar in there when you need it stored. Leave it out in the open air when you can.

When the smell goes completely away, buy a new Fender case for your no longer smelly guitar.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but putting it back in the old stinky case is uh...well. You get the idea. Get rid of that case. It's not even the case that comes with the guitar from Fender, so throw it out. It's worthless anyway if it smells.

What everyone is not telling me is how long might it take for a smelly guitar to loose it's smell. 1 month? 2 months'? 1 year? 10 years? 50 years?
Maybe never? Get it?

It's not at all clear to me that the guitar will ever be ok unless some action is take. (i'll try the gold wax when I get a chance). It would be helpful to hear other strories about how long it took other smelly guitars to unstink. Do guitars that were around smoky bars ever unstink? Sometimes finish doesn't loose it's smell, I have an acoustic guitar with a varnish finish that has a bit of a smell to it and I expect it always will, but it's not a bad smell.

I'm sorry, but telling me to buy a new case is really not very helpful- and that seems to be the best Fender can come up with. The problem is bigger than that. Getting the guitar to unstink in some finite time is the issue.

Sounds like you don't want to solve the problem.

It could be a week using the new case method. It could be a month. It could be a year. Nobody has a crystal ball for you on that. What we are saying is if you keep putting it back in the old case, you'll NEVER get rid of the smell.

Want a chance to get rid of it? GET RID OF THE CASE. That's the only way you're gong to find out how long it takes.

If you are suggesting you want some other method, like a refinish, or a replacement body, formally ask the custom shop or the place you bought the guitar from. Nobody can make that decision but them.

If you want to know how long it took to get stink out of guitars with that problem, the answers are going to be different for different guitars. You want someone to say 6 months and you expect that to actually hold true for your guitar?

This is all I can give you because you seem too dense to understand basic logic. Sorry.

Sprinkle baking soda in the case. Leave overnight and vacuum out. Repeat as necessary!

And waxing the guitar will do nothing but prolong the odor since you're locking-in the smell by doing that.

I didn't read all four pages but you do realize nitro has a moldy smell to it naturally right?it kinda smells like an old man and when you leave it in a case it builds up. that's what it sounds like to me but I can't believe nobody has told you this yet.... you need to find a more informed forum to explain your problem too no offence.

Man, I don't know what you're smelling, but you are wrong! Nitro smells sweet.
And, when you find that..."more informed forum...", please let me know too.

Apparently what you and I smell as a "moldy old man smell", smells sweet to some folks.

On a bit more serious note, I do smell a sweet chemical smell on some parts of the body of the guitar. It's amazingly strong given how old the guitar is. Other parts smell musty, some parts smell rancid. I don't smell anything on the neck. Why is that, isn't it all nitro?

The rancid smell is strongest where the padding of the case makes firm contact with the back, and to some extent the top- the plastic doesn't smell so a lot of the top is fine.

John Page may have been right the "improperly cured" hhg may have leached into the finish. (although I don't understand how you improperly cure hhg)

I also don't understand why the fender nitro is still off gassing so strongly after all these years. My Gibson 335 never off gassed like that. None of my other nitro guitars have a nitro odor that strong. There is certainly something unique about the finish on the body of this guitar which goes beyone the rancid smell which probably came from the bad case.

So here's a simple question. How long should I have to leave my guitar out of the case before the "sweet" (nitro) smell goes away?

I'll consider this progress since at least you didn't tell me to buy a new case.

You may be right about the wax sealing in the stink, I'm a bit worried about that myself but it was the only guitar related suggestion that I got (other than wait until the cows come home) and it might be worth a shot.

The first part of that quote ^ seems to confirm that the stink is coming from the case, so I'd definitely suggest not using that case anymore. I bought a case along with my Schecter Hellraiser that smelled a little funky, i put about a half a pack of drier sheets in it and closed it up for a week then opened it and let air our for a week, problem solved. Apparently yours is worse than mine was, as the smell of thae case never transferred to the guitar, which also does NOT have the nitro finish so maybe the nitro on your guitar picked up the smell more than other finish types.

There is no definite answer to how long your guitar will take to air out, as I recall from your first post this is an issue that's been going on for a number of years, so it may take some patience until the smell is completely gone. Sadly, it would be impossible for anybody here to be able to tell you definitely how long it will take for the smell to go away. It seems that the general concensus around here is that the case is the issue so I'd get rid of the case as my first step.

I also wouldn't try any waxes until after it airs out as wax is a sealer and would most likely cause it to take longer to air out.

It's been about 7 months since I started this thread so I thought it was about time for an update. The guitar has been out of the case the whole time, unfortunately it still stinks. And while it's not as bad as when it came out of the case it seems to have settled into a steady state of funk.

At one point some time ago I gave the back a pretty good buffing, that seemed to help some but it's hard to tell. It's a really thick nitro finish so I could buff some more. I'm still looking for suggestions.
