There you go.

An 11+ year old guitar returned to Fender because it "smells".

Try a new case.

Guitars don't "smell". We would be out of business.

The guitar definitely has a smell to it. I'm not sure if the case caused it or not. The case does have the name Fender on it too, though.

Maybe you can shed some light on the hide glue twead cases that were known to have problems back in the Page era. It would be nice to be able to rule than in or out.

Also, is there a cleaner that can help. Naphtha doesn't seem to be able to do anything for the smell.

I've just tried about three applications of Mecgaures #6, which has a smell of it's own but the "Fender smell" seems to be cutting through that as the Mecquare smell goes away.

One thing that I think I notice is that the neck finish doesn't have the smell, it's comming from the finish on the body. If I put my nose right up against the neck- nothing. If I put my nose right against the body, there's the smell.

Is the neck finish the same as the body finish?

Was there something "extra" added to the honey blonde finish of my guitar? For that matter, why was there a hand written hang tag on the guitar that said "nitro finish" when I bought it? Weren't all CS guitars nitro in the 96-97 time period?

I once sent the Serial number to Fender to find out more info about the gutiar but they had no record of it. Why is that?

Any help would be appreciated.

John

My fear is to buy a second hand guitar from a heavy smoker.
Then it goes for years whatever you do.
As ME suggests, buy a new case and save the original one in case you wish to part with your guitar.

I bought the guitar new.

If I don't get the smell off the guitar first I'll just ruin another case.

The guitar has spent most of it's life sitting next to a 335 Dot which is about 5 years older and the 335 doesn't stink- neither does its case.

The thought has crossed my mind!

Well the Naphtha and the Mequares didn't do he trick. The old smell is back.

One thing that I really notice is that the smell is only on the body finish. The neck and the fingerboard are fine. I don't see how that could happen if the case was the cause for this.

So I ethier have a smelly piece of ash, alhough I'll add, it's a beautiful piece of ash or it's the finish itself. I think it's the finish because the neck doesn't smell. The body does have the same finish as the neck, right? In my mind the big question is what did Fender use for the vinage blonde color?

Surely someone at fender, one of the "masters" could be of some help with this, -- no?

Hi John.

If the smell is only on the body, here is what i would try.

I would remove the pick and tremolo covers first.

Maguire's gold paste wax. give it a good two or three coats. the wax will go into the finish and hopefully flush out whatever has caused the smell.
This wax has a odor itself, most people find it a pleasant aroma.

Smell the wax first to avoid adding a smell you will not like, but most do.

I've tried everything I and many other folks could think of doing but I can't get the bad smell out of my CS Page era strat.

One suspicion is that the tweed case that it came with is the problem. I actually think there are two distince bad smells that the guitar suffers from and one seems more nitro based to me.

I've given the guitar Naptha baths, it spent months out of it's case, while I let bleach fume inside- etc. etc. But nothing helps.

Does Fender have any magic ways to help a bad smelling guitar. My wife won't let me take it out of the case.

Help!

You could try some solution with bacteria. If you can find soil fertiliser made of bacterius subtilis you should get a fresh smelling guitar in the end. I am not sure wich brands you have where you live. do some research. The bacterias kill and eliminate anything organic.

It took you 11 years to complain about it and now you think FCS should do something about a smell? Hmmmm!

I think you misread the thread.

I don't have any Maguiar's gold paste but I do have:

Macguiar's Heavy-cut 4
Macguiar's fine-cut cleaner 2
Macguiar's professional cleaner wax 6
Macguiar's mirror glaze 7 professional

Will any of them substitute for the gold paste?

I'm a bit worried about using a wax to seal in the stinkl That is, if it doesn' penetrate enough to get rid of it.

Just thinking if you put some charcoal in the case it may absorb whatever the offending smell maybe, worth a try
Charcoal may seem a mundane material, but as we have seen its unique properties have been valued by man throughout history. Its use as a fuel was crucial in the development of metallurgy, and its qualities as an artistic medium have been appreciated from the earliest times. Today activated charcoal is of enormous importance in the purification of water and air. The science of charcoal has been studied for over 200 years by such outstanding figures as Wilhelm Scheele and Rosalind Franklin yet it still remains only partially understood. We have made important advances recently, but there is still much to learn.

A solution, if it's so bad, is to sell it, or trade it and let it be someone else's problem. It's even possible they won't think it's a problem as we all react differently to different things!
Then you can get one that smells sweet!
