That neck is insane.

If you do consider breaking for parts... give me a shout. :P

For what it's worth, I sold a guitar many moons ago because it stunk. It was a Highway 1 HSS, one of the first ones out as far as I recall. Came with a softcase, and the guitar itself just reeked. It smelt... off. Can't really describe it. Musky. With an almost horsey vibe to it.

Either way, it smelt horrid and I got rid of it. Weirdly enough, I think Fender's nicest-smelling cases are from the late '90s/early '00s. I have a Lone Star and an American Deluxe which came with perhaps the best-smelling cases ever. 2004 American Deluxe Tele... meh. No real smell. Disappointing.

If it's any help, there's a Custom Shop case on eBay currently. I've been eyeing it up. If you want to hock your case, please let me know. I'd be interested at a cut-down rate, considering the smell.

Yes, the neck is great. Actually, other than the smell, the body is too. It has a great ring to it even when the guitar isn't plugged in. It's very light and I imagine that has something to do with it. I haven't given up on getting rid of the smell yet. Time and chemicals have helped a lot. Now the worse smell is from the pickup cavity and that needs more work. Then I'm going to buff the whole guitar. If I have to I'll re spary the nitro. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

That's the smell. I knew I couldn't have the only guitar with this problem.

On another forum John Page told me that those old CS cases were glued with hot hide glue, just like back in the day, and if they weren't cured right they went rancid. Lacking a better explanation, that's what I think happened. I did contact the case maker, they were no help.

The case is so bad that I can't even open it up in my backyard to air out without my wife complaining that the stink is getting into the house.

I'll let you know if I decide to let go of the neck though. By the way, the pickups, are great too.

Thanks! It would be a crime to let that neck disappear into the ether. It's just gorgeous.

I wish you the best of luck with your travels. It's a shame that Fender can't really do much- when you're spending that amount of money, it's kind of a kick in the teeth. But I suppose they can't cater for everyone if they have a case that 'smells funny'... one man's poop is another man's potpourri.

If you want some links...

As I was checking the body the other day I noticed a small chip in the finish just outside the neckplate outline near one of the screw holes. The chip went pretty much through all the finish and looked like it went right down to the wood. I decided that I better fill it so that it won't spread. I decided I'd mix some acrlyic paint to match the guitar as best I could and then maybe put a light nitro dab over that. When I got the color pretty close I notice that on the other side of the plate it looked like somebody did something similiar - a long long time ago. Looking closer I could see a bit of the same paint left intact on the side I was fixing.

I blew up some of the body pictures that I posted earlier in the thread because they show, although not too clearly what I'm talking about.

Just below the "A" is the chip, you can see just a tiny bit of what looks to me like some fill paint left on the top corner of the chip. Just below the "B" is a smaller but same type of fill on the other side. I'm guessing that most of the fill under the A popped out when I took the plate off but I really don't know when it happened.

Image

I also noticed a similiar, more sloppy, paint smudge/fill on the front at the edge of the pickguard, I'm pretty sure that it lives under the pickguard though. It's a similiar color paint of some type.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any idea why this would exist on my guitar? Any idea what kind of paint fender would use to fill this? The paint by the neck plate was done before the guitar was buffed out and it's smooth with the body. The sloppy blob under the pickguard could have been done after the body was buffed out and no attempt was made to make it smooth with the body.

Image

Also, it looks like fender puts something into the screw hole under the neckplate. Does anyone know what this is? It looks kind of like bees wax but I'm not sure.

I don't think anyone would like this case. Nearist I can tell this is a Fender quality problem with the case. And even though Fender didn't make the case they did sell it with a high end guitar and are therefor I think they should be responsible for the case issues. This guitar spent it's life living next to a gibson 335. The 335 has a nitro finish. The case and the guitar don't smell.

Thanks for the case links but the guitar is going naked until the smell is gone.

I've tried everything I and many other folks could think of doing but I can't get the bad smell out of my CS Page era strat.

One suspicion is that the tweed case that it came with is the problem. I actually think there are two distince bad smells that the guitar suffers from and one seems more nitro based to me.

I've given the guitar Naptha baths, it spent months out of it's case, while I let bleach fume inside- etc. etc. But nothing helps.

Does Fender have any magic ways to help a bad smelling guitar. My wife won't let me take it out of the case.

Help!

Tweed smells good.........otherwise..... Sell it............

Here's a bit better picture of the paint fill by the neck plate that came with the guitar.

Image

After thinking about how odd it is that both sides of the neck plate would have this fill I'm wondering if the neck plate was changed out after the guitar was built and before I bought it. If a slightly bigger neck plate was on the guitar and it damaged the finish then that could be why fill was needed. Does this make any sense to anyone?

I took a photo of the neck pocket. There's a vague image of a custom shop logo and some writing but I can't make it out. What do "norma' neck pockets of 60's stratocasters form 96 look like?

While I was checking out how much the "fill" by the backplate sticks out when the plate is on I thought I take a photo. This is the side that stayed intact from the day I bought it new.

Image

It sure would be nice to know what Fender used for the fill. Could it be some kind of nail polish? I guess it would be great to know how Fender would have done this sort of thing in the custom shop back in 1996 and it would also be nice to know what they recommed today.

Other than the missmatch in color, which may have gotton worse with time, and the fact that the fill is opaque it takes a polish just like the nitro.

Also here's a photo of the "gasket" material by the screws under the backplate. Is it bees wax? That's what it looks like to me.

Oh come on, somebody at the Fender Custom shop must remember what they used for "fill" in this kind of situation back in the day. It is what it is, fess up! I'd like to fix the other side using a similar/indentical fill. It seems to me that this should be a reasonable place to look for an answer to a question like this.

That's not "fill" it's the clear lifting from the color. That happens sometimes when the neckplate screws are tightened too much. That is beeswax, but it's not a "gasket". We put that on the screws to make them thread into the wood easier.

After taking a closer look at the guitar, I think you're right. If I hold the guitar just right in the light I can see a little bump where the color mismath is. I also found a few more places on the guitar that has the same "lifting". There are a few spots under the bridge.

Image

On the other hand there is this weird splotch near the edge of the pickguard, but still mostly under it, near the middle pickup. The color of the splotch matches the thick color in the neck pocket. But this may be just another example of the lifting that you're talking about. What accounts for the thick line of finishe near the edge of the neck pocket? It looks like it might have been intentional. It looks like it might have been put on after the clear. Or maybe paint just ran down the jig that was holding the guitar while it was being painted.

Image

Some of the splotch stuck to the pickguard, I imagine that accounts for the weird shape of it.

Image

Thanks for the info, it was helpful. It inspired me to scarf some tinted finish from the neck pocket and use that as a base to fill the chip that's missing near the neck plate. I think that will work out fine.

Thanks for the info. I had to replace a toilet this week so I guess I had beeswax gaskets on my mind.

I noticed that Fender also used beeswax in the strap buttons. How does Fender get the wax in there? Does Fender mold little wax washers? Just curious.

While I'm asking questions. Is it normal for the ink to fade from the neck pocket? I can barely make out that there is a custom shop stamp there. Even after all these years the Decleration of Independance has more ink left on it than my neck pocket. Does it blead into the nitro?

Thanks again for the help.

wow i can't beleive I read this whole thread...

A quick tought while you have the body stripped:

I have a large (new model) drying machine at home that came with a shoe drying rack.
This rack is insterted into the lint catcher (you remove the catcher) and you can dry or AIR out whatever will fit on there. I have gotten the skunk out of many hockey equipment bits and even my skates went in there.

If you have access to such a dryer, set the temp to NULL (air only) and sit the body on there. If you want further results, use a LIGHT piece of cloth with an alcool solution (dryel for dry cleaning should work) or febreeze. Let it air out for as many cycles as you can stand (it takes about 2-3 hours for a set of funky shoulder pads).

Check that your air flow is good, as you don't want to ruin your wifes dryer...

Hope this helps.

EDITED for WARNING: MAKE SURE YOU SET THE BODY STRAIGHT AND IT DOESN'T HIT THE DRYER BLADES WHILE THE MACHINE IS TURNING... ALSO A GOOD IDEA TO CHECK UP ON THE PROCESS TO REALIGN THE BODY SO IT DOESN'T FALL OFF THE RACK. YOU REALLY DON'T WANT A TUMBLING GUITAR BODY IN YOUR DRYER...

With luck I could get a relic job while I'm de-stinking the guitar!

I don't think my wife is going to like me putting this guitar in the dryer. If the air isn't getting hot how is this different than putting a fan on the guitar? Maybe I'm just not understanding how your dryer does this.

I could hook the dryer exhaust up to a box outside the house and put the guitar in that. Maybe some warm air from the dryer with some bounty would help.

Actually a little very soft heat is always present in the dryer but the main helper here is the piece of light fabric with alcool or a dry cleaning solution. The chemicals are made to catch smells!
