So out of desperiation I sprayed the body with a heavy, and I mean heavy, dose of Fabrez.
After letting it sit that way for a day I got a little worried as the Fabrez was drying out into gooey spots all over the body. It was hard to tell if it was harming the finish so I cleaned the guitar. No harm was done to the finish. At the moment all I can smell is a bit of Fabrez with a bit of the cleaner smell. We'll see if the stink returns in a few days.

I just noticed that I could register my guitar for "Custom Care" and I was lucky enough to find my purchase receipt so I could enter date of purchase.

On the purchase receipt the guitar is described as:

Fender Custom Shop 60s Strat, Vint. Blonde
*special Laquer Finish*

Anyone have any idea what *special Laquer Finish* might mean?

Weren't all CS shop guitars from 1996 Laquer?

John

So it seems that the smell is back- although it might be a bit less.

I decided that it's time to take the guitar apart and get serious.

There was a strong chemical smell behind the neck plate.

A different kind of smell in the jack pocket.

A very strong smell in the pickup cavity. Does the shielding paint usually smell?

I was going to just buff the guitar because that seems to do some good but I'll need to do something in the cavities. Maybe a dose of Fabrez after it all airs out a bit.

I took some photos of the body. It's very lightweight.

There's a name stamped inside the spring cavity. It's hard to make out with the paint over it but it's something like J or maybe T Byors or Byers. It looks like there were other things stamped but it's all hard to make out with the paint over it.

Any sugestions on what to do next?

Correct me if I`m wrong but FCS never use shielding paint in control cavity (unless it is specified as masterbuilt)

Prove that I`m wrong - show me the photo of any stock Custom Shop body with shielding paint

The guitar was built in 96. There's no reason to doubt that it's the real thing.

Here's another one I found on the web.

I do not doubt the genuiness of the guitar.

My concerns a re related to the point that it might have beem refinished\modded some tome ago (including shielding in the control cavity ewhich I persona;;ly never seen pn stock Custom Shop guitars. Only Ritchie Blackmore did it on his personal guitars - but this is not our case :)))

Also you might consider complete refinish of the guitars (there are some guys in US who could do that). Approximately USD 200-300 for relic refinish.

Though that only make sence if guitar sounds great. If not - just sell it

Black shielding paint was commonly used by the CS in the past. I have owned 4 from the '90s, a '94, '96,'97 and a '98 and all had shielding paint done by the shop!
I still have two of them, a Nocaster and a Mary Kaye Strat.

Why did Fender stop making this a common CS feature?

Since the guitar is in piecies I thought I might as well take some pictures of how things were done in 96.

Here's the pickguard assembly.

Nothing really stinks on the pickguard assembly - maybe a bit of left over fabrez maybe a trace of the body stink but nothing to get a nose out of joint about.

The neck pickup has a blue dot and the bridge pickup has a red dot. The middle doesn't seem to have any dots. Does anyone know what the dots mean? I'd guess red means hot, blue cool - less output.

What kind of pickups did 60s stratocasters have in 96?

Well while I'm waiting for the cavity to air out a bit I thought I'd post some neck photos. The neck is very nice, I'd call it V shaped - I don't know what Fender calls it. The neck doesn't have any bad smells, which I find curious. Anyone have any ideas why the body would pick us stink from the case but the neck wouldn't?

Does anyone know what the "Yamano" means?

"Yamano" is a large, perhaps largest, musical instrument dealer in Tokyo. They have a long and historic connection with Fender, and the Custom Shop especially!
Many top guitars destined for there were designated "Yamano grade."

Here's a short clip of part of the store...

Thanks for the information.

It looks to me like there's a place for a number of some sort next to the # symbol.
Do other Yamano guitars have numbers?

I bought this guitar new in the US. I do remember the dealer saying something about it was originally supposed to go to some overseas dealer but somehow I got it in my mind that the overseas dealer was in England.
