Shortly, I'm going to order a team built '56 Strat. In its base format, it comes with Custom '50s Strat Pickups.

This order will be somewhat custom anyways, as I am requesting a Closet Classic finish. My question is whether I should stay with the Custom '50s Strat Pickups or request a different set?

For example, would CS '54s or CS Fat '50s be a better route? Something else?

Our set play list generally stays in the realm of surf and rockabilly, so I'm looking for a set of pickups that can handle reverb and twang too.

Thanks for any insights.

Paul

I can't speak for the '54s or Fat 50's, but I have a 2004 Fender Custom Shop '56 Reissue Relic 50th Anniversary Strat in Aztec Gold ( 1 of 100) with the Custom 50's Strat Single Coil pickups and I LOVE IT. It is the best sounding strat I have ever played and is my #1 gigging guitar, and I have some VERY nice one's to pick from.

I have some You-tube videos linked to my website where I am playing it if you want to hear it.

My CS 56 NOS is great, however it sounds best when played thru tube amps and comes into it's own when the amp is driven at 3/4 to full on.
Bear in mind I'm refering to a Fender Champ, Deluxe or a Blues Junior, as well as a late 50's Magnatone, all from 5 watts to 40 watts max.
For me Solid state amps just don't mate well with vintage Pups.
Too dry and clinical.

Iv'e also found that vintage pups are more demanding, to find that sound you will really have to treat the amp as half of the musical instrument and dial in the best response.

Good Luck.

Hey 53magnatone, thanks for the info. My main amp for gigs is an Allen Accomplice Jr., which is sort of a boutique version of a Deluxe Reverb. So I'm with you on the preference for tubes.

Definately the Stock Custom 50s

Many LOVE them, and you can't get them aftermarket

The Fat 50s, and Custom 54s are a couple of my favorites,
and you can pick up a set anywhere,

Hey Rick,

That's a good point about lack of availability in the after-market. Based on the positive reviews, I'll probably go with the '50s. I have an extra set of Fat '50s if I ever wanted to change things up. Thanks for the help.

Can someone describe the tonal characteristics of the '56 pickups? How do they compare to the CS'69s or the CS'54s?
