Hi
I was wondering if anybody could give me some info about this guitar.
I bought a customshop ´59 stratocaster black nitro, black pickguard with a c shape birdseye maple neck and fat 50´s PU some years ago. The serial number is FE 58. I was told that these guitars were very expensive (5000 euros) when they first hit the market, but Fender forgot or didn´t make any promotion for them, so nobody had heard of them and wouldnt buy them. My local dealer got a couple of them and sold them for about 3500,- euros, and they sold out fast. I bought one of them (FE 92), but then i found FE 58 on sale in germany for 2200 euros. I bought this one to, and delivered the other one back.

The guitar is from 2000, and I was wondering if anybody knows how many of them that was made ? Can anyone confirm the story mentioned above?
I was doing some adjustments i took it apart for the first time, and was blown away by the wood quality of the body. The stamp in the neck poket said 1978!!!, thats 9 years before customshop was born. Is it normal that a guitar body is waiting 22 years to become a guitar ?
The guitar is great and beats the hell out of any customshopfenders i´ve ever tried ( never tried a masterbuildt though).
So if anyone could tell me anything about this one I´d be very happy.

I cannot tell you about your particular models, but it is not unusual for a builder to hold onto a body or neck for many years, especially since 20 years ago there was only a small number of musicians who would consider a custom built, very expensive and not considered profitable by the bean-counters, plus at the time, CBS owned Fender, that is the equivalent to GE owning a VAG group (audi, porsche, VW.)
I find it probable that someone in the shop thought that these bodies should be for a special project. More than likely, since Fender was under "Big" corporate Mode of operations, (profits, profits, profits) and artistic/ artisan values and skills don't figure in that equation, the bodies were put away out of sight.
Obviously, despite CBS's attempt of the KKR (kolber,kravis,roberts..ie LBO's or as they are defined today as private equity firms) method of running a company, luckily for us today there were Fender employee's who still had a vision as to what Fender instruments had been and should be.
I'm personally glad CBS is gone, an entertainment company should never be at the reins of a musical instrument company.

I kind of wonder why you need that, to tell how many was made of th FEXXX series. I got this one from an authorized customshop dealer, so its hardly a fake. But here it is
