Hello all.
Bit of a rant. In the market for a new CS strat. Had a few days off work and been travelling round guitar shops to find the one for me. Im in the UK, and about 90% of CS strats here are relic models. This is not something i want. I would like the age process are wear to be done in my hands. Not the craftsman in the workshop. I not dead set on anything definate, but have been trying to find a EC CS LTd in grey. None left in country and 2010 models are US issue only. Arrrrrrgh!!
Rant over.
Just needed to get fustration out.

See if you can order what you want thru a shop!!!

Seems to me that since the relic look is in fashion this minute, shops are going to stock merchandise that will move out the door...
I'd love to find the Custom Strat that I want with my particular specs but...

Dont want to go down the Ebay road. Ideally would like to play the guitar before i purchase.
Even with regards to shops ordering stuff in there seems to be very little non relic stuff available, and some seem unwilling to order stuff in so you cant try it with no definate sale at the end. Though that is understandable to a degree.

May be that a Channel crossing is inevitable, a road trip is always an adventure, and what better reason than to check out the shops in France..

As has been stated, the relic look is the popular vogue at the moment.

The reason why you meet resistance from shops when you question about a pristine model is the fact that said shops have a lot of money tied up in these relics where they don't want to sell you what they don't have. In other words, they want to unload what they have first, thus recouping their investments and I'll even venture to say that what they do have in stock has been lingering there for a long time already, much to their chagrin.

I know I'm in a minority with the following but IMHO,

1. I think ALL relics, right down to the whole concept of relics are a disgrace.
2. All the CS models are grossly overpriced to begin with and certainly not worth the price.

YMMV.

Spec one up..contact a few decent Custom Shop dealers in the UK. They'll get you a price and if your spec is good and not too off the wall, one may well order it in as a one off just because it's cool and if you don't like it someone else will...Simples

As far as all relics, that's a really wide brush stroke, I'll grant you that it has gotten out of hand, personally the only reason I would love to have my old 59 Les Paul Custom is because of the current value, but, would I hang it on my shoulder and play all night ?? thanks but no thanks... That was the main reason I switched to Strats in the 90's, it was just too heavy, great sound if you were playing ZZ Top, Zep, Foghat etc..etc..not so great if you wanted sound versatility..

I believe some of the relics are classic, but it's like anything else, a minimum few is a novel idea, but when everyone on the block has one it just becomes generic.

As far as CS price/cost factor, the old adage applies
" You can get it in any color you want, as long as it's black..." everything else is optional. The original's are priceless and 99.9% of musicians cannot afford a guitar which may be worth more than my House,
let's not even think about having a six figure instrument in a typical club setting.
It's OK for Anne Sophie Mutter to be on stage playing a Strad. However her venue is a tightly controlled stage unlike a club in the less than ideal section of town.

My 56 NOS was not cheap, but it was preowned and had sat in it's case since 2001 until I purchased it this past winter. I accepted the price, IMO I got a great deal and I could not find what I wanted from a standard strat. I wanted vintage specs. Played thru an old Magnatone it delivers.. As well as thru any other amp Iv'e played (tubes only).
I plan on ordering a new Custom Shop Deluxe this fall, however price is what you pay for those CS editions, take it or leave it..
If you could get an Audi RS4 for the price of a VW Jetta then everyone could.
I have no complaints with the quality of the CS 56 NOS, it is what it is, a replica of a bygone era replete with that time periods idiosyncracies..

I have also been considering the CS deluxe and also the Classic Hbs-1. Both of which tick certain boxes in my criteria, and for me are both well worth a look to see how they feel/play and sound through my own amp. No deluxes left and only relic versions of the Hbs. We all know about the supply problems that Fender have had this year. I was in my local guitar shop yesterday, which is part of a large chain, and they had just recieved 1 American built tele. First new American built guitar they have had in for 4 months. For a big multi national like Fender i think thats pretty bad. Apologies, I digress.
I just dont get the relic thing. I know everyone to there own. But, surely the ageing of a guitar comes with the nostalgia attached to it. So you know how all the little dings and scratches happend, And the stories that goes with them events be it from a gig or when you just knocked as you was rushing to load car in the rain cos you was late for a gig. Or you simply just dropped it. That to me is what makes a relic guitar relic. The wear that occurs and that you was there through every single moment it.
So, for me, a few thousand pound for a 'new' relic CS is worth nothing. Because there is no personal nostalgia with it. So that chip on the body was not done by you at a gig when you were giving some. IT was done by a fella maybe called Keith, with some sandpaper. How cool is that. Not.

Feel much better now that off my chest. Lol. Haven t been in there, no. But have checked there on line stock and spoke to them on the phone regarding what they have. Going to sort out another day on the road to take in a few more shops and have a look. Lead to believe that the Stevenage Coda store has a better selection of custom shop stuff? Might even have a trip into town and have a look down Denmark st. Have a large number of shops within a not to massive radius from me. So quite lucky in that regard. Jus got to be a bit patient till i find the one.
