Funny, I surfed for over 30 years and I rarely recall any one of us listening to surf music, much less for a psych up for an aggro dawn patrol raid.

that 62 reissue is sweet and it is fortunately not named after any of the beach boys.
Those guys had session musicians play on their recordings, just a half step removed from the Monkees.
Yeah they had catchy vocal melodies but the guitar work was/is not up to par with some of their contemporaries. The beach Boys were more about marketing Hype than music. all of it is so antiseptic as to fit in well as elevator musac.

They seemed to know their way around their instruments at the TAMI concert.

I'm assuming that by adding the wink at the end you meant these comments as a joke, right?

No, Not entirely, i may have been young when the beach boys were top of the pops, but i still relegate them to the Annette Funicello file.

I know that's harsh but, the BB's were never up to the hype. Much of the so called surf music was not very good, more like soundtracks to Dragnet, Car 54 and 1 Adam12.

In your opinion.

There are many types and tastes in music.

Have you ever seen the TAMI concert?

You are of course entitled to your opinion but I cannot understand why people still have that out-dated narrow "surf/car" stereotype of the Beach Boys. I'm in my late '40s but I suppose if you grew up in the 1960s it might be hard to shake that particular image of them. Granted, the majority of their hits were produced during the years 1963 to 1966 but it would be a shame to reduce their incredible legacy to that three-year period. In my opinion, their early surf/car songs were at least as sophisticated as the early Beatles material and by late 1964/early 1965 they blew right by them. I enjoy the early surf/car songs immensely but my personal favorite era for Beach Boys music is 1965-1970.

I agree that recently the whole Brian Wilson "genius thing" has been over-hyped but it was definitely not undeserving, just overdue. Pet Sounds and Smile are indeed works of genius and have nothing whatsoever to do with Annette Funicello! I have been in a Beach Boys tribute band since the 1990s so I am obviously biased but I can attest to the fact that a lot of their music is very complex and difficult to reproduce live on stage. One of the main reasons you don't see very many Beach Boys tribute bands out there (and even fewer good ones) is that their songs are not as easy to play and sing as you would think. While the Beatles songs are of course brilliant the guitar parts and the vocal harmonies are fairly easy to figure out and perform, but with the Beach Boys, especially the songs that were produced from 1964 on, you're moving up to a completely different level. Because of the fact that Brian often employed mini-orchestras it requires a lot of work to transcribe the complex arrangements and figure out how it will work with our instrumentation, and then there are the vocals! THAT is probably the #1 reason why you don't see very many BB tribute bands - the vocals! The Beach Boys have the most incredibly beautiful and sophisticated vocals in the history of pop music - period. I think I will stop there.

I wish I had the talent to write "God Only Know". Brian Wilson is a pro at producing and writing songs and the other Beach Boys were as talented as well. It is easy to criticize when you are on the outside looking in. I wish I could have succeeded in playing rock n roll, instead of doing a day job. I was close, but no cigar. I will buy this Strat if Fender decides to produce it and I hope it will be team built, so it will be in my price range. Thank you Beach Boys for your music and the joy you brought too many. :D

There was really no one else in pop music writing, arranging, and producing music like this back in 1966, not even the Beatles. Burt Bacharach is the only one I can think of but he was like an old man compared to Brian, who was only 24 years old at the time!
