I will want this guitar when it comes out. I have been waiting for Fender to honor the Beach Boys with one of their guitars and this Strat is the perfect choice! I can't wait to see what Fender will be showing at the 2011 winter Namm Show.

Audiodrome you have put me down as the wrong quote. I did not state anything about an oily white guitar. Above is my quote. I still want this guitar, if it does materialize in the future. :D

I think it got all mixed up because I was trying to quote a quote of a quote! :D

Mike,

I didn't mean to make such a fuss over this. It's just that I am a HUGE Beach Boys fan and I tend to get overly excited sometimes. However, I realize that the market for this guitar is probably limited, dedicated as it may be, but who knows? I hope I'm proven wrong! In my Beach Boys tribute band I'm the token "authentic vintage" guy so I'm all over this kind of stuff. Our other guitarist uses a Variax (I guess it is more convenient than switching guitars all night like I do), but considering the fact that he "plays" the Al Jardine role in the band this guitar would be perfect for him!

Here is my "Beach Boys" rig:

Hey Audiodrome, why don't you set up a poll so everyone can vote on getting Al's guitar made for us Beach Boys fanatics! My 2 favorite songs by them are "Sail on sail on Sailor" and "God only Knows". :D

Ahhhhhhhh.........There it is. Now you see it. Mike has followed up with the first thought I had when reading his initial post reply which was "testing the waters."

I asked Mike about this at the Music Gallery "Road Show". He said that the reason they brought in Al's Stratocaster was to make Al a copy, and that they have no plans at all to make a Beach Boys guitar at Fender.

Thank you for that information BooBoo. I will now have to set my eyes on the winter Namm Show and see what Strat I will want next.

Interesting... I guess I got all worked up for nothing! But then again, if this whole thing is nothing more than making a backup copy for Al then don't you think this quote from the Fender News article is a little strange?

Jardine graciously loaned his weathered white ’62 Stratocaster to Fender so that it could be “cloned” by Fender Custom Shop craftsmen over the next year.

I mean, if it was Al that wanted the Custom Shop to make a clone of his guitar then why would the article say that he graciously loaned his weathered white ’62 Stratocaster to Fender? That comment makes it sound like Fender asked him if they could clone his guitar and he "graciously" agreed to let them borrow it.

I don't know - just speculating...

I think you are making much ado about nothing. The specs for a 62 Strat are pretty straight foward. Fender knows how to make that. They could have done the relicing from detailed photos of Jardine's Strat, but instead he loaned it to the Custom Shop. He probably had a smile on his face when he did it. The rest is literary license by the writer.

Face it. The Custom Shop is probably not going to make a run of Jardine's 62 Strats.

I am definitely making too much ado about nothing, but I guess that's just my style!

After all that fussing I am now inclined to agree that an Al Jardine Signature Stratocaster would probably not be a big seller for Fender. However, I do think that a "Carl Wilson Signature '63 Jaguar" could be a winner. If I'm not mistaken the Rickenbacker Carl Wilson 360CW/12 and 360CW/6 signature models did pretty well and have become highly collectable. Now I realize that these guitars were made in limited quantities but if Fender were to make a "Jaguar CW" I imagine they would take the same approach, and I'm willing to bet that a Fender Carl Wilson signature model would be a much better seller than the Rickenbacker signature models were. I know that Carl did play a couple of different Rickenbacker 360 models for a little while during the 1965-199 period, but that iconic white '63 Jaguar is really the guitar he is most associated with, at least as far as I'm concerned (that's the main reason I bought my '63 Olympic White Jaguar).

As far as ownership of the original '63 Jaguar goes, at least its current whereabouts are known and I imagine that a loan to the Feneder Custom Shop could be arranged. The question is, did Carl's family just loan it to the Hard Rock Cafe or did they sell it to them outright? I couldn't find any details about in online other that the fact that it is current on display at the Orlando Hard Rock Cafe.

I was reading in Fender News that Al Jardine has lent his original weathered 1962 Olympic White Stratocaster to the Fender Custom Shop for "cloning" purposes. Could there be a possible Beach Boys Signature '62 Stratocaster Relic model sometime in the near future?

Here's the blurb:

Jardine brought an exciting air of real Fender history to the event, as it was the Beach Boys who, by so visibly using Fender instruments and amps, gave a huge boost to the fledgling southern California company back in the early ’60s . At Thursday’s event, Jardine graciously loaned his weathered white ’62 Stratocaster to Fender so that it could be “cloned” by Fender Custom Shop craftsmen over the next year.

:P That would be a nice Fender to add to the stable of guitars.

I can't think of any reason they SHOULDN'T make such a guitar and market it to those who appreciate the music of the Beach Boys -- If it is an authentic reproduction and the fans want it, then who am I to say they cannot have it, especially if it is profitable to Fender to make such items...

Funny, I surfed for over 30 years and I rarely recall any one of us listening to surf music, much less for a psych up for an aggro dawn patrol raid.

that 62 reissue is sweet and it is fortunately not named after any of the beach boys.
Those guys had session musicians play on their recordings, just a half step removed from the Monkees.
Yeah they had catchy vocal melodies but the guitar work was/is not up to par with some of their contemporaries. The beach Boys were more about marketing Hype than music. all of it is so antiseptic as to fit in well as elevator musac.
