I was reading in Fender News that Al Jardine has lent his original weathered 1962 Olympic White Stratocaster to the Fender Custom Shop for "cloning" purposes. Could there be a possible Beach Boys Signature '62 Stratocaster Relic model sometime in the near future?

Here's the blurb:

Jardine brought an exciting air of real Fender history to the event, as it was the Beach Boys who, by so visibly using Fender instruments and amps, gave a huge boost to the fledgling southern California company back in the early ’60s . At Thursday’s event, Jardine graciously loaned his weathered white ’62 Stratocaster to Fender so that it could be “cloned” by Fender Custom Shop craftsmen over the next year.

As much as I love the Beach Boys and Fender Strats, where would this guitar be any different from any other white Strat with a rosewood neck? Do we really need another high priced "relic" guitar?

I consider myself one of the biggest Beach Boys fans on earth (I also play in a touring Beach Boys tribute band) and I have to agree with you. When does it end? I mean, there really isn't anything especially unique about this particular guitar. For me, the issue is not so much that Fender wants to do it, but that they waited so long to do it! The Beach Boys Signature Series should have been one of the first Custom Shop projects when this whole "vintage replica" thing started back in the '90s. I always thought that this classic lineup (see below) of Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, and Brian Wilson with those iconic white guitars was the quintessential Fender image and the ultimate representation of the vintage Fender look.

I can see it now... The series would include Al's '62 Stratocaster, Carl's '63 Jaguar, and Brian's '63 Precision Bass. You could choose between the painstakingly-detailed "cloned" relic or the NOS-style vintage replica (but only in Olympic White). Obviously, Al's Stratocaster is still in his possession, but currently at the Fender Custom Shop, and Carl's Jaguar is hanging in the Orlando Hard Rock Cafe so fortunately they are available to examine and duplicate. Off the top of my head I can't recall anything special or different about either of those two guitars so they probably wouldn't stand out in the current relic crowd. Brian's P-Bass was the only one out of the three with anything you could consider a unique characteristic, but unfortunately it was stolen sometime back in the late '60s so it would not be available for examination. In almost every picture of Brian with this bass (and later when Bruce Johnston had it) you can see that one of the control knobs is either missing or broken off. I imagine that this "special feature" wouldn't be too hard for the Custom Shop craftsmen to replicate! Well anyway, it's fun to dream sometimes...

Look familiar?

Colors/details might be a little off, but that's no big deal. And they're all "classic" or "vintage" 60's.

I know I know... Sometimes I feel like Fender is oversaturating us with all of these choices that essentially the same except for a few minor variations, but I guess they are trying to please everyone. Now speaking of pleasing everyone, the Jaguar in the link you provided is the right color scheme but those pickups would never do and all you would have to do here is change the pickguard:

I always wonder about their popularity these days. I personally think that Fender should promote the hell out of them - almost like "poster children" for their vintage line! Like I said in my previous post I've been playing in a Beach Boys tribute band for the past 15 years and it seems to me that the popularity of the Beach Boys is neatly contained within the baby boomer demographic and the artsy intellectual music set. Interestingly enough, for the baby boomer crowd the early surf and car songs reign supreme while the Pet Sounds/Smile-era material is what matters to the musical hipsters.

Liek I said, the details may be different. Not that hard or expensive to change the pickguard and pups on the Jag.

My wife and I go to see them every year when they play Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia. Yeah, we like the surf/car stuff the best. Five minutes after they go on, dozens of beach balls are bouncing around the pavillion. This year was almost like Woodstock. Heavy storms toward the end of the concert left hundreds of people out on the lawn wrapped in blankets and towels, soaking wet. No one left, though.

Hard situation for Fender - they want to produce these "artist" guitars - which I think is a great thing... But what do you do when the guitar the artist uses is basically stock?

That's just it. There is nothing unique about the guitar.

Now I don't mean to offend Mr. Jardine, an incredible vocalist who helped define the classic Beach Boys sound, but he doesn't seem to fit the "signature model artist" profile. Then again, maybe Fender just decided it was finally time to make a Beach Boys Custom Shop model guitar, and I say it's about time! :D

I will want this guitar when it comes out. I have been waiting for Fender to honor the Beach Boys with one of their guitars and this Strat is the perfect choice! I can't wait to see what Fender will be showing at the 2011 winter Namm Show.

Don't be surprised if it looks like this, only painted white, and costs twice as much:

But it will be reliced too!

Mike, don't you think the Beach Boys (or in this case a Beach Boy) are long overdue for some to receive the recognition they truly deserve as iconic Fender players? Plus it would be nice to have a little more variety in the signature models. it seems to me that the majority of the signature artists fall into the rock category, mostly blues rock and country rock. Off the top of my head I can't think of too many pop artists with a signature Fender - Hank Marvin? As far as I know Dick Dale is really the only surf artist Fender has acknowledged with a signature guitar. The Beach Boys, while not especially known for their technical prowess, at least gave Fender an incredible amount of free product exposure via TV, movies, concerts, album covers, and picture sleeve.

Start a poll.
It's not what I think. It's what you think.
Put the RTP up, and ask how many would think that's a good idea.
Priced same as a Beck
