This NGD post is 2 weeks late. It is 2 weeks late because I've been spending EVERY spare minute playing my new guitar. That's how good it is. I didn't even want to waste time taking pictures. It's that good-- no joke.

The first note I played on this thing my wife actually apologized to me and said, "I thought the difference between guys like you and David Gilmour was talent. I'm sorry-- I never thought it was just the guitar." Can you imagine? Now, we all know this isn't true, but for a quality instrument to make that kind of difference even to someone that doesn't play much is remarkable (she does play a bit-- I started teaching her.)

I ordered this guitar over a month ago, but only managed to pick it up two weeks ago. I feel privileged to play it, honestly. I don't think I've ever felt this level of sheer joy playing guitar.

As for the "thinskin" , it's midnight blue. I wasn't sure if I subscribed the the whole "breathe better" argument, but I will say this guitar sounds better to my ears than 3 other Claptons I played (an artist series, a different CS team built, and a Masterbuilt.) I also found the neck more comfortable than the Masterbuilt (T. Krause) I tried. This is NOT an indictment on the Masterbuilt. It means my tastes are different than EC's plain-and-simple. The neck on this feels a bit fatter and the edge of the "v" feels a little softer.

Anyway, thanks for allowing me to blabber about it. The guitar is truly amazing. The gulf between Custom Shop and production line instruments is far greater than I imagined.

Oh yeah-- I got the heaviest one Wildwood had too. And that was a good decision. It feels GREAT. (The contours on the CS Clapton are sexy too-- really deep and sleek.)

PICS (Thread is worthless without them)

Gongrats, very pretty guitar! That nitro finish on the neck just gives it that little bit of extra character.

You said you got the heaviest one; may I enquire how heavy it is?

Asuming you tried some of these axes; what sort of minimum weight would you advice?

It's just under 9lbs. 8.83, if memory serves. It's not so much that I'd advise a minimum weight for someone else as that I personally like medium-heavy guitars. (There SEEMS to be a trend of people loving light guitars recently.) I historically have done better the heavier the guitar is. (Honestly, they typically sound better to me also, but I believe this to be psychological.)

Thanks for the well-wishes everyone! I'm loving the heck out of this guitar. (The nitro finish is really comfortable on the neck too. I think I like it better than the finish on my American Special Tele, which was my previous favorite.)

8.83 indeed is a fairly heavy weight for a CS guitar these days. They do say that in general sustain improves with a heavier wieght and that you get more treble. The current trend indeed seems to be for the lighter guitars.

Enjoy your guitar! Maybe in 10 - 15 years we'll find some pics of a nicely naturally reliced axe... 8)

Play that nice axe in good health...that's a beauty ! I love the EC signature line - with both the lace sensors and vintage noiseless pups.

Enjoy !

You are correct. The difference between standard production and Custom Shop is night and day.

Because Clapton played Gibsons with humbuckers, for which reason he doesn't use a full-sized humbucker in the bridge position of his Strat and prefers to emulate humbucking sounds with the mid-boost? At least add the hotter ceramic Noiseless pickup in the bridge and tell him what he thinks about!

The idea came after seeing a mid-to-late 1980s photo of Eric playing a Strat with two humbuckers and a floating (unblocked) vibrato bridge.
