HI Guys

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these 2 guitars please.

My dealer is to far away to go try them, but as far as I can tell from his advert, the 59 NOS has Abby Pickups, the 56 NOS has Custom 50's.

Thanks

Alan

Educated guess: would your dealer be Coda Music in the UK?

If so, don't hesitate to give them a call or send them an email. They are knowledgeable people and I'm sure they can answer any question you have on these guitars.

Hi Robert

Excellent guess, but I wanted an opinion from someone who actually had one or the other or both.

I got a quote for a 59 Strat, but with an NOS 56 Boat Shape AA Birdseye Neck, and Abby 59 Pickups.

Problem is that Coda already have a 59 Team Built in stock with Abby Pickups but it has a 59 thin neck which I am not keen on.

My 88 USA Strat has a thin neck but I much prefer the Boat Shape.

Weird animal.
Both if you like boat shaped necks, grap this one as it gets Abby pups (check if signed or initialed)

Is this a re-post? I seem to remember a thread like this a few weeks back :D

What kind of Abby pups? Don't discount the CS '50's...They are some of the finest pups Fender makes IMHO and not widely available.

Doesn't the dealer list the specs so you can compare the differences?

Some of the usual differences are:

1. The '59 may have a RW board / '56 1-piece Maple neck.
2. The '59 may have an 11-hole PG / '56 should have the 8 -hole
3. Neck shape - BUT not in this case obviously.

The remainder of the specs (excluding any special detail like the AA birdseye) should be pretty much identical I would imagine.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies. The spec for the 59 Strat is as follows.

Fender custom shop custom order early '59 NOS Strat fiesta red, gold hardware.
premium alder body
Custom '59 neck shape
9 1/2" radius.
medium jumbo frets
Abigail Ybarra handwound '59 pickups

I think I am right in saying that, with the exception of the Abigail pickups,my 56 NOS is virtually the same.

I agree about the pickups,I have Custom 50's on my NOS56.

Maybe I'll just stick with what I have.

Alan

The thing with those 59's Coda has, is that they are a bit weird animals; they have one-piece maple necks (thus no rosewood board) but also the 11 bolt 3 ply pickguard.

Coda's story on these axes is that they got request from people wanting the classic one-piece maple vibe, but with a slimmer neck profile and without the 1 ply pickguard (why do people fuss so much about it if they bend a little? I like the clean look of a sober 1 ply pickguard with only 8 mounting screws).

Obviously, the 11 bolt pickguard combination with a one-piece maple neck is historically incorrect, since Fender ran out of one-piece maple necks before they ran out of the 1 ply pickguards. The true transition models should have the 1 ply pickguard and the rosewood neck, I've never seen anything the other way round.

Of-topic; but is there a significant difference between the Custom 50's pups that come the the NOS/Relic '56 Strat and the Fat 50's?

The fiesta red '59's at Coda have 8 hole 1 ply guards..they do have some relics with 3 ply guards.

Beautiful '59 there! Kind of a funky 8-hole pattern on that one, never seen one quite like that - :? I guess you'll have to have a custom one made if you ever need to replace it.

On another note - Jill & the boys say Hi -

That's because it's a 1959 pattern and vintage correct three ply guard. Check out '59 photos in the Galaxy of Strats book.

Best wishes to Jill and the boys.

Very COOL! You're right...I can't believe I never noticed that before!?!

I've seen them mostly with the '60 11-hole pattern...and a photo of one with the "ever-elusive" 10-hole pattern...but never noticed the 8-hole pattern like that before.

Thanks man

Check out the second example for 8 holes.

Very interesting, that erratic pattern of the 8 hole pickguard is new to me too! Just to be sure; it that a real '59 in the bottom pictures with the strange 8 hole 3 ply guard?
