In 1989 (or so) I traded a Les Paul for an incredible sunburst Tele w/ a birdseye maple neck. The fellow I traded with worked at the Fender amp factory in Tualatin, OR (no longer there). He told me he picked up the guitar at the Custom Shop and that it was one of two made for Merle Haggard. Merle selected the other one. The back of the tuning head has the number "2" stamped into the wood as the only serial #. Can anyone verify this story or help me ID this thing?

"2" for another Company means "second choice" -they could put it on all their new guitars BTW-.
Maybe here it's a pre-run both having been presented to MH who just took one.
An assumption
But you can contact the Consumer Relations Dept.
Any COA ?

Alain's advice is right on as the Fender Consumer Relations Department can be very helpful. You might want to include a picture with your email to them.

If you have a pic, I'd love to see it too.

Many thanks to both of you. I will follow up as you suggest and let you know what I find. I am currently away from home but will post a picture of the Tele when I return. :D
