Hi Guys

I have an NOS56 Custom Shop Strat, bought new about 6 years ago.

Over time I have swopped the pickups round for others I have acquired.

Problem is,now I don't know which are the original pickups.

I have a set of pickups which have the off white and black wires, but no number on underside of the bobbin.

Did Custom Shop pickups use bobbins with no number,or do I have to keep looking.

I presume the originals were Custom Shop fat 50's.

Sure hope someone can help.....please.

Thanks

Alan

The stock 56 pickups were not marked in any way.

All 3 would have black and white cloth wire.
If you hold the magnets from each one up against
each other, they should all repel, since they are all
the same polarity for this set.

They are "not" Fat 50's
Fat 50's have an RW/RP middle pickup, which usually
has a yellow wire instead of white, that middle pickup
would attract to the other 2 if you put the magnets close together.
Most of the Fat 50s I have seen also have like a blue dot on
the neck, and a red dot on the bridge pup

I'll try to dig out a pic of my old ones somewhere also

Here's a couple of pics from a set I had.
don't have a pic of the bottom, but they are plain,
no markings whatsover.
This was from a relic set.
The NOS should have similar pole pieces, without the rust

Hi rickc007

Absolutely fantastic answer, and thanks to you I have now identified my original NOS pickups.

Question now is,if the pickups are not Fat 50's,can anyone tell me what they are please?

As I said, the guitar was bought new about 6 years ago.

Many thanks

Alan

They are called "Custom 50s", they are wound to be "vintage sounding",
they are still the stock pickups for the 56 Time Machine

Thanks,I am going to put them back in the NOS tomorrow,a friend of mine was most upset when he heard I had swopped them out.

Looking forward to hearing what they sound like again.

I'm curious as to why? Did you take out the Pups in the NOS, I have a 2001 56NOS(photo's on other thread).

Granted it took me a while to dial in the sound, it is a particular guitar, but once I figured it out and how to match it with my amps, I would not change anything on it.
I have found that it sounds best mated with a vintage amp (Magnatone 410 Custom Classic) or new the Blues Junior works really well with it..

Well the original Pickups are back where they belong and now it's just a question of finding the right height, more trial and error.

Why did I take them out in the first place, well.

I think we are all guilty of thinking that we can improve on what we already have, and I am no different.

I wanted to try other pickups and the NOS56 seemed like a good guitar to try them in.

I have tried Bareknuckle Custom 59's and Bareknuckle Apache's,both are excellent pickups but now I have replaced the originals,I am more than pleased with them.

Just another case of the grass not being greener on the other side.

I would venture to say that I don't know which pickups would be better than the Custom 50's.

Abby's come to mind, but I have never tried them or heard them, and I don't think I can buy them in the UK.

So a happy ending, thanks to all who helped.

Alan
