Hello,

I just bought a Fender Custom Shop David Gilmour signature relic strat. It is being two weeks. It is a fantastic strat, i don't say it because i am a David Gilmour fan but it is highly detailed stunning guitar. It is manufactured in 2008, so it was waiting for me in its case since 2008.

I had an issue with the guitar, after playing it two weeks i saw black gummy things both back of the neck and on fret board. First i thought that it was dirt, then i cleaned it with hand cleaning wet wipes and after i put some olive oil and wiped the back of the neck. Neck seems ok, there is not black gummy stuff anymore. After i read something on the internet that it would be paste wax that fender custom shop luthiers put.

So here are my questions:

Does Fender custom shop put wax/paste wax stuff on the neck of Gilmour relic strat?

If no, what would be the black gummy thing? Dirt?

If it was wax is it ok to clean it or i made a mistake cleaning it?

Is it ok to cleaning it with hand cleaning wet towels/wipes?

Is it ok to put olive oil or i made a mistake?

Yes i know i am a mixture of clean+obsessive+lazy kind of guy .

Thanks

Can you describe the black gummy things?
I've got one as well, when I had mine, after a few days, yes, she got pretty dirty on the back of the neck. At first i was too scared to even clean it, though i found it was actually down to the dry skin coming off my hands. I gave her a good wash with the Fender Meguirs care kit & she came up right as rain:

Dunno if people here would recommend using this (as i'm new to the forum), however worked fine for me. If i'm right in what i think you're referring to, it's just dirt on the back of the maple neck. :)

Thanks for the recommendation it is EXACTLY what happened. It was dirt it is sure but i am sure that there was some kind of stuff left from the shop, there was a thin layer of grease, paraffin or stuff like that i don't know, and with dirt it got gummy and black. I can still see this layer on fretboard it is transparent like paraffin and with dirt it gets black. I cleaned it with a had cleaning wet wipe and olive oil i hope it is fine.

Holomatrix did you have this issue later again or only the first days (i mean a maple neck can get dirty, i used maple necks, but this was different it was like a thin layer of paste)? If it happened once this will correct my thesis that there was something left from the shop, Mark Elder called it dirt form the relic process.
