I always wished that the Custom Shop would do a "Psychedelic" guitar series and I think that Syd Barrett's early '60s "Mirror Disc" Fender Esquire would make for a great Signature model, considering some of the more bland examples currently available.

and it looks like somebody out there already tried it!

Does anyone know where this guitar is today? Does his family still have it?

No, they don't unforunately, however it's a good question as to where the original is right now. As far as i read from several books, Syd once quoted that he gave it away for a black telecaster he ended up having (however rarely played, seemed he played it finally when he did his last gigs with 'Stars' before they split after about 3-4 gigs).

He used to have random people knocking on his door when he was living in the Chelsea Mansions apartments in London, it got to the stage he'd just hand them guitars/amps & pedals to get them to leave & never come back. Whether he gave some random his mirrored one is a question that can't quite be answered.

It's surprising as if it was swapped with some guitar store in the UK, it probably would have been sourced by now to some private collector or collection. :?

I actually own a David Gilmour signature relic Black Strat (R46028 - Feb 2008):

If Custom Shop actually made the signature Syd Barrett tele, yes, i would purchase one, i've been intending on building one for years.
Only site i found of a custom replica made was some luthiers from Italy:

The biggest problem (which i suppose even Fender would have) is finding color & good quality photos of the original to try & duplicate it.

It was exhibited in Pink Floyd's Interstellar exhibition in Paris. But somewhere i read that the guitar exhibited was a replication of the original guitar. So i edited my post.

Any ideas about the original one or if was it the original one or a replication ?

Unforunately that wasn't the original, it was a replica, albeit a very nice one too. :(

I've seen the photos of the Paris exhibition in 2003, Gilmour's real black strat was in the Echoes room of the exhibition, which had previously been given back the year before from the Hard Rock Cafe in Dallas, Texas, which had been in quite a sorry state in a glass case on the wall between 1986-1997. It had the old Kahler trem ripped out & the original bridge refitted & was used the the year before in the Classic Albums Making of Dark Side documentary & after that used for Live 8.

The link you posted incorrectly refers to it as an 'exact copy of Syd's mirrored Telecaster'. It was actually an Esquire with no lipstick pickup:
Quote:
The room focuses on three main aspects: Syd and his influences, the band's early visual expression, and the path to the first professional Floyd line-up. Ahead of you is Peter Wynne Wilson's Aldis lamp, which provided their first proper light show, next to an exact copy of Syd's mirrored Telecaster.

One of the only quotes I could find of Syd referring to it in post Floyd days was in an interview from http://www.pink-floyd.org/artint/rsdec71.htm:

Quote:
'I never felt so close to a guitar as that silver one with mirrors that I used on stage all the time. I swapped it for the black one, but I've never played it.'

The only other guitar AFAIK that can be seen, was Syd's first acoustic he owned, a 1963 Harmony Sovereign, which was used on Piper At The Gates of Dawn (apparently). It's currently on the wall in Hard Rock Cafe, New Orleans:

I wouldn't be surprised if Gilmour had made a point to either look for it himself or get his tech, Phil Taylor to find it in the guitar shops, as if it really was traded in, it'd be somewhere.
Just think, in the back of a guitar shop stockroom in the middle of nowhere, there's a priceless guitar that if Custom Shop got their hands on it, could work magic. 8)

Speaking of Syd's Esquire, I am going to build one but I need to know some details first:

1. When were the rosewood fretboards introduced?
-slab or not

2. What kind of bridge did Esquires have during that time?
-over-the-top
-through-body

I am going to use an ash body (two piece because I can't afford a one-piece), a neck with no skunk stripe, silver sparkly finish, and mirrors.

I actually remember seeing the original mirror disc telecaster hanging from the ceiling of a music shop in San Diego, Ca around 1995 if that helps.

Alas, I graduated and moved from San Diego 10 years ago.
I don't even know if the music store exists, or if the guitar was the real deal.

That is a repro, I can say with 100% assurance that no one knows where that Tele is. There have been several rumors over the years, but no facts. One of the more interesting ones that I heard was that Jimmie Page owns it, minus the mirrors, and was in fact the tele he used in the Yardbirds around 68. But again, no facts...
