To my surprise, I walked into my guitar center a while ago and saw a Fender Custom Shop Custom Classic on the wall for $1499! Needless to say, I didn't have the 1500 on me so I put it on layaway and I'm 300 dollars away from paying it off and wicked excited! While I didn't get to play as much as I wanted, I'm positive it's for me. Anyone play one of these badboys? Anything I should be weary about it? I mean I'm super excited to finally own a Custom Shop (A small dream of mine since I started playing guitar).

congrats! an amazing guitar...the pickups and the neck (i have a C shape) are what i really like about that guitar. me and my friends A/B'ed a new thin skin 59, an american series with Dimarzio areas and a 62 reissue against it, and it proved to be the favorite.

Thanks! YES, the neck is fantastic and so comfortable. It's a 3tone sunburst with the first three serial #s being CN9, which means I've got a Custom Classic created at the end of the 90s on my hands. Can someone give me the specs of it?

Did you mean Custom Classic Fusion? The original Custom Classic series has been discontinued in 2009.

The Custom Classic Fusion Stratocaster has three DiMarzio Areas ('58 in the neck/middle and '61 in the bridge) paired with an S-1 switching system.

This guitar is also available as an HSS model with a Duncan Alnico Pro II humbucking pickup in the bridge position.

Image

The twangy Fusion Telecaster sports a Twisted in the neck, a Texas Tele in the bridge and a 4-way selector switch.

Both the Tele and Strat feature Schaller locking machine heads, with the latter having an LSR Roller Nut and a Deluxe 2-point synchronized tremolo with milled stainless steel saddles and a push-in whammy bar.

I'm positive it's a Custom Classic, CN stands for Custom Nineties and the 9 means it was made in 1999. Who would sell such a gem is beyond me but I'm glad I walked into the store at the right time!

Custom Classic Stratocasters and Telecasters made prior to 2003 were named American Classics. These guitars featured Texas Special pickups. Your guitar is an American Classic model.

The American Classic series has been renamed Custom Classic when the Modern/Hot Classic pickups came into the scene in 2003.

Dave Murray's Custom Classic Strats feature three Duncan Hot Rail humbuckers and an original Floyd Rose locking tremolo.

There was a transitional period during which the Modern Classic pickups were replaced by Bill Lawrence's Samarium Cobalt Noiseless. These changes occurred when the S-1 switch and the large headstock were introduced in early-to-mid 2008, a couple of months before the series being taken out of production.

As of 2009, the Custom Classic line is discontinued and replaced by the Custom Deluxe series.

I'm pretty sure it's a Custom Classic

The last run of Custom Classics had something like this:

Custom Classic Strat from the Custom Shop. Features a thinskin nitro finish over an Alder body, lightly figured maple neck, 9.5" radius, med jumbo frets. Also features Modern Classic pickups in neck and middle, and a Hot Classic in the bridge with a steel inductance plate, as well as the Custom Classic 2-point synchronized tremolo and stainless saddles (pop-in arm). It also has a tone knob that when turned fully to 10 will take the tone control out of circuit (i think:)

The American Classic was done right up to the Customs and they had Texas Special Pickups...i think the finish was nitro at one point and the earliest models had screw in arms

Hope this helps

Thank you ChromeFace and 60cyclehum, I've learned a lot about my new guitar. I suspected there were Texas Specials on there, considering how the poles looked but now it has definitely confirmed it. Question though, is there anything setting this aside from any American Standard? I mean, if I can get a better guitar for the price, I'd gladly take my deposit toward another instrument. Am I getting a legit worthwhile custom shop instrument?

American Classics were great guitars too. Definitely a legit worthwhile instrument. Very close to an American Standard at the time, but built in the custom shop with Texas Specials, better materials and workmanship. some of the necks weren't that flamed, but you can tell the quality difference from other guitars within the first few minutes of playing :)

Thanks 60CycleHum for the input! It definitely felt like a wortwhile instrument. I was torn between it and the John Mayer Stratocaster but I couldn't turn away from the custom shop and the way it just sounded. There will always be chances to pick up that sig, but I felt it was my opportunity to pick up an American Classic. How do Custom Shop American Classics compare to today's Standards anyways?

In my opinion i like the American Classic much better than current american series, including the deluxes. The American Classic is very strange because it looks like your average am standard, very unassuming, but whenever someone picks it up and plays it, they're like "wow! what is THIS?"

My friend has an Eric Johnson (really great guitar), but he liked the American Classic so much he tried putting Texas Specials in his American Series...still sounded different, which proves that it's really the sum of the parts, the wood, etc. I can go on and on :) Enjoy yours! :)

The Tele sported a Nashville pickup arrangement: a Texas Tele pickup in the bridge and two Texas Special Strat pickups in the neck and the middle. It also sported a reverse control plate with a TBX tone circuit and a 5-way switch.

Image

When the American Classic series was renamed Custom Classic in 2003, the reverse control plate remained, but the layout returned to the traditional 2-pickup arrangement with a Classic in the bridge and a Twisted in the neck, as well as a 3-way pickup selector and a no-load tone pot replacing the TBX circuit of the older models. These were replaced by two SCN Tele pickups hooked into an S-1 switch in early-to-mid 2008, a couple of months before the series being discontinued and replaced by the Custom Deluxe line.

I have a 2007 CS Custom Classic and it is amazing everytime I pick it up. I have a friend who really doesn't like Strats and has a Les Paul. He picked it up and I had trouble getting it out of his hands. The clairity, resonence, and depth are amazing. Congratulations.

Picked it up a few days ago and I haven't been able to put it down since. The neck is SO FLAMED. My buddy came over while I was playing it and from across the room he immediately went "WOAH man, that flame is beautiful!". I'll have to take pictures but this guitar is so great. Texas Specials are real punchy and bright... I might swap them out eventually for some Custom Shop 60s pickups but for now, this guitar is one of the best I've played, hands down.
